Happy in the new home
One day in late April, in a new house with the fragrant smell of paint in the Dien Phuoc Resettlement Area, Ms. Huynh Thi Kim Ngan (a single mother raising two young children, a near-poor household in Dien Lam commune) was busy welcoming guests. For her, this was probably the happiest day in the past few decades when she received the handover of a new house under the province's temporary and dilapidated house elimination program. Although her right leg was in a cast due to a dislocation and she had difficulty walking, her face was still radiant, constantly smiling as she showed us around the living room, bedroom, kitchen, etc. Her first-grade son was also happy because for the first time he had a TV and a proper study corner.
Leaders of Dien Khanh district and Dien Tho commune presented the decision to hand over the house to Ms. Doan Thi Tha, Phuoc Luong village, Dien Tho commune. |
Ms. Ngan shared that the old house was temporarily surrounded by corrugated iron, just enough to put a bed and a stove. During the hot afternoon, she had to go to the tree to avoid the heat, and when it rained, she had to collect water in the house. Ms. Ngan did not have a stable job, and every day she washed dishes for hire, earning 50,000 - 70,000 VND. Her eldest daughter was sick, and the cost of treatment was high, so she had to stay home after 8th grade. "It was difficult to eat, I would not dare to dream of building a house without the province's support program," Ms. Ngan said sadly. The new house is 40 square meters wide, with a construction cost of 80 million VND, of which 60 million VND came from the province's temporary and dilapidated house removal program, and 20 million VND was mobilized by the Vietnam Fatherland Front Committee of the commune and HDP Nha Trang Joint Stock Company to support. In addition, the District Steering Committee gave the family a TV, the Commune Women's Union supported 3 million VND, and the construction contractor also supported part of the labor cost. "My children and I now have a stable place to live, no longer worrying about the rain and wind. I am grateful to the leaders of the province, district, commune and village for helping this dream come true," Ms. Ngan said emotionally.

Saying goodbye to Mrs. Ngan, we visited Mr. Cao Thanh's family (Dai Dien Trung 2 village, Dien Dien commune). The new house was built on an area of over 100m2 after more than a month of construction, with 60 million VND from the support program and 50 bags of cement sponsored by the Commune Front. The house is spacious and tidy, completely different from the old scene. Mr. Thanh shared: "My mother is over 80 years old, has had a stroke and is bedridden, my son is mentally ill and has had 3 brain tumor surgeries. Before, when it rained, the house leaked everywhere, finding a dry place for the two of us to sleep was very difficult. Since having a new house, my mother is very happy. Her last wish has come true. With a stable place to live, my family will try to make a living and overcome difficulties."
This happiness is not only for Ms. Ngan and Mr. Thanh’s family but also for dozens of other poor and near-poor households in Dien Khanh district. According to the district People’s Committee, the entire district has 33 households supported to remove temporary houses (13 newly built houses, 20 repaired houses). To date, all houses have been completed and handed over to households.
Maximize resource mobilization
Immediately after the province launched the program to eliminate temporary and dilapidated houses, the entire political system, units, localities and people of Dien Khanh district enthusiastically responded. The district People's Committee advised the Standing Committee of the District Party Committee to establish a Steering Committee to eliminate temporary and dilapidated houses; assigning specific tasks to members in each locality. The program was urgently deployed from the district level to communes, towns and each village and residential group. District specialized departments proactively coordinated with localities to carefully review regulations on residential land and support legal procedures to ensure the right subjects and support standards.

Mr. Nguyen Van Gam - Chairman of Dien Khanh District People's Committee said that the district has launched the emulation movement "Join hands to eliminate temporary and dilapidated houses in Dien Khanh district by 2025", mobilizing the consensus of the entire political system, business community and people. The Vietnam Fatherland Front Committee of the district and socio-political organizations act as the core to mobilize, gather and unite people to actively participate in many forms, such as: Donating funds, human resources, working days... with the motto "Whoever has something to help, whoever has merit helps merit, whoever has property helps property". Thanks to that, in addition to 1.38 billion VND from the "For the Poor" Fund supported by the province, the district also mobilized more than 900 million VND from units and people to support the construction and repair of houses for 33 households.
Identifying the elimination of temporary and dilapidated houses as a breakthrough task with profound humanitarian significance, the District Party Committee, District People's Committee and Vietnam Fatherland Front Committee of Dien Khanh District have proactively and effectively implemented the task, ensuring proper procedures and regulations, and supporting the right subjects. The newly handed over houses have truly become warm homes of love, adding confidence and motivation so that no one is left behind on the development journey of the homeland and the country.
