The 8th Congress of the Vietnam Athletics Federation (VAF) ended at noon on April 25 in Hanoi , electing a new Executive Committee of 19 members. Among them, Mr. Hoang Ve Dung continued to be trusted after 2 terms as President of the 6th and 7th terms.
The 3 Vice Presidents are Mr. Pham The Trieu, Mr. Nguyen Trung Hinh, Mr. Nguyen Dai Duong. Mr. Nguyen Manh Hung (Deputy Head of High Performance Sports Department (under the Vietnam Sports Administration) has been appointed to continue holding the role of General Secretary.
The congress summarized the achievements of Vietnamese athletics in the 7th term, with the completion of targets at the SEA Games and ASIAD, finding sponsors and business partners to have financial resources.
However, Deputy Director of the Vietnam Sports Department Nguyen Hong Minh said that the Vietnam Athletics Federation needs to demonstrate its role more clearly to achieve marks in management and competition results of Vietnamese athletics in the arenas.
Therefore, in the 8th term, the Vietnam Athletics Federation is tasked with developing a project for the development of Vietnam's athletics until 2030 and a vision to 2045, with the goal of winning all gold-silver-bronze medals at the 2034 ASIAD (at least 2 gold medals), and having 2-3 athletes qualified to participate in the Olympics. These are the goals expected to help Vietnam's athletics "make a key breakthrough" and rise to the continental level.
In parallel with the project, the Department of Sports and Physical Training will screen key sports - from 8 to 10 sports, including Athletics - to soon complete the report on building the Program for developing key sports to prepare for participation in the Olympics and ASIAD in the period of 2026-2046, and submit it to the Prime Minister for signing and promulgation.
According to the Head of the Athletics Department (under the Department of Sports and Physical Training), Mr. Nguyen Duc Nguyen, if approved, athletics will receive an investment of about 400 billion VND in the period of 2025-2045. Mr. Nguyen also said that if there is a key investment and the right investment in elite athletes and strong events, Vietnam will have the opportunity to win a gold medal at the 2030 ASIAD.
Vietnamese athletics has only won 2 ASIAD gold medals (in 2018 in Indonesia), with 1 gold medal by Bui Thi Thu Thao (long jump) and 1 gold medal by Quach Thi Lan (women's 400m hurdles), but Lan was only promoted from silver medal because her opponent was found guilty of doping.
At the most recent ASIAD (held in 2023 in China), Vietnamese athletics had no medals.
