Vietnamese athletics 'thirsty' for Asian gold

Having completed the main competitions, the Vietnamese athletics team still has not won any gold medals at the Asian Championship held in Gumi (Korea).

20-year-old talent Tran Thi Nhi Yen is a notable highlight of the Vietnamese athletics team at the Asian Championship held every two years. In the most attractive 100m speed event of athletics, the runner from Long An excellently finished first in the qualifying round. In the final, she continued to make her mark when she finished third, winning a bronze medal with a time of 11 seconds 54. Not yet surpassing her best time of 11 seconds 40, but with the courage shown in the continental arena, against formidable opponents, Nhi Yen shows a promising future and needs stronger investment. The bronze medal in the 100m event that Nhi Yen won at this Asian Championship also marked the return after 16 years of Vietnamese athletics in the speed distance, since the silver medal of her senior Vu Thi Huong at the 2009 Asian Championship, also in Korea.

Another face who did not win a medal but also made a breakthrough in performance was Nguyen Trung Cuong. The 25-year-old runner from Ha Tinh finished 5th in the 3,000m steeplechase with a time of 8 minutes 38 seconds 25. This achievement surpassed the national record he himself held (8 minutes 51 seconds 16). With his progress, Trung Cuong promises to reap more success for Vietnamese athletics in the international arena in the near future.

Unsuccessful defense of Asian athletics championship

Vietnamese athletics fans were somewhat regretful when witnessing the Vietnamese women's 4x400m relay team only coming in second after India, unable to defend the Asian gold medal despite Quach Thi Lan and her teammates' great efforts. Bringing to Korea the team that won the 2024 Asian relay gold medal, including Quach Thi Lan, Nguyen Thi Ngoc, Nguyen Thi Hang, Hoang Thi Minh Hanh, and a thorough preparation process, the Vietnamese girls promised to successfully defend the gold medal in the women's 4x400m relay. However, the team lost narrowly to India and only finished second. Appreciating the efforts in each position, the coaches said that the Vietnamese relay team was not even, in which the two positions of Nguyen Thi Hang and Hoang Thi Minh Hanh ran out of steam on the track. This is an event in which Vietnamese athletics has potential, not inferior to continental opponents, so it needs to be invested heavily to have an even team.

"Golden girl" Nguyen Thi Oanh dominated the 32nd SEA Games with 4 gold medals but still showed a gap in skill compared to her opponents when competing in the continental arena. In the recent Asian 1,500m final, Nguyen Thi Oanh tried many times to surpass them but was "knocked out" of the competition by her opponents. In the women's 100m hurdles, Huynh Thi My Tien only finished 7th with a time of 13.69 seconds, and in the women's long jump, Tran Thi Loan ranked 10th with a time of 5.39 m.

On the final day of the Asian Athletics Championships taking place today (May 31), the Vietnamese athletics team has Nguyen Thi Oanh competing in the women's 5,000m event and Quach Thi Lan in the women's 400m hurdles event.
