Electricity consumption in Ho Chi Minh City breaks record, North at risk of shortage

Báo Thanh niênBáo Thanh niên07/05/2023

According to information from the Ho Chi Minh City Power System Control Center, on May 5, the total electricity consumption of the city continued to set a new record with an output of up to 94.434 million kWh/day, an increase of 868,606 kWh compared to the peak set on April 25 of 93.566 million kWh. Previously, on April 21, for the first time this year, the amount of electricity consumed in Ho Chi Minh City set a record with a daily electricity consumption output of 93.53 million kWh/day.

Thus, within just 15 days of the hot season, the amount of electricity consumed in Ho Chi Minh City continuously set new "records".

On May 5 and 6, due to intense heat, electricity consumption in many places increased sharply.

In Hanoi , electricity consumption also began to increase significantly due to the impact of the weather. If in April, the highest daily electricity consumption was about 72 million kWh, then the output recorded on May 5 was 78.23 million kWh.

The main reason is that the heat leads to high electricity consumption, mainly due to the increase in the number of hours of use of cooling devices. In addition, in the same hour of use, in extremely hot weather, high ambient temperature, cooling devices must operate at maximum capacity, so the amount of electricity consumed is also greater.

Electricity consumption in Ho Chi Minh City sets new record | Economic Movement

On May 6, Vietnam Electricity Group (EVN) advised people, offices and production facilities to pay attention to using electricity safely and economically, especially during peak hours at noon and in the evening. At the same time, pay attention to using air conditioning reasonably (set at 26 - 27 degrees or higher, use in combination with fans) and pay attention not to use many high-capacity electrical devices at the same time.

In the face of the above situation, EVN said that the structure of mobilizing power sources this year will have a big change, the total output of hydropower, coal power and imports will decrease sharply, so it will have to mobilize high-priced oil-fired electricity in the dry months. Since mid-April, the National Power System Control Center has had to mobilize oil-fired generators to supplement the power source for use.

Particularly in the North, from May to July, when the North enters the peak of the hot season, power consumption in this region is expected to increase by 15% compared to the same period. According to EVN's forecast, if extreme situations occur and the water level of hydroelectric reservoirs in the region drops sharply, the North is at risk of a shortage of 1,600 - 4,900 MW of electricity in May and June.
