This morning, June 6, more than 76,000 candidates taking the 2025-2026 school year entrance exam in Ho Chi Minh City entered the first exam subject, literature.
Although it is considered the "easiest" exam in many years, anxiety still exists, especially when this year's literature exam is expected to have fundamental changes according to the 2018 GeneralEducation Program.
The probability of "hitting the jackpot" is 0: Candidates proactively accept innovation
Bao Ngoc, a student at Hoang Van Thu Secondary School, shared that although she was still a bit nervous, she had no intention of "guessing the questions" or "cramming". The female student affirmed: "The probability of "hitting the jackpot" is zero!"
"I don't like things that are too formal. Writing requires creativity, novelty, and practicality to fully develop my abilities and apply the knowledge that my teachers have taught me," Bao Ngoc expressed.

I also hope that the exam will revolve around the topic of the country, because I really like to share about the contributions and responsibilities of youth. Through the process of studying and participating in team activities, Bao Ngoc has accumulated a rich experience to present on this topic.
Also taking the Literature exam at Le Hong Phong High School for the Gifted, Bich Ngoc and Trang Linh, students of Nguyen An Khuong Secondary School, also said that the 10th grade literature exam in Ho Chi Minh City always has a new, attractive style and is close to students' lives.
The two female students were not too worried because they had been familiar with this type of question. According to Ngoc and Linh, the effective way to study for the exam is to study each specific type and read more news and real-life stories to cite in the essay.
Similarly, Nguyen Huynh Le Vi, a student at Hung Vuong Secondary School, is confident with about 80% of the knowledge he has prepared.
"The test materials this year were not included in the textbooks, so my friends and I did not guess the questions," Vi shared. This female student also expressed her love for the topic of the country and the responsibility of youth in building and developing the country.
"Blocking the way" of rote learning
Mr. Nguyen Bao Quoc, Deputy Director of the Department of Education and Training of Ho Chi Minh City, informed that the 10th grade entrance exam in 2025 will remain stable with 3 subjects: literature, math, foreign language. However, the exam questions for each subject will have important adjustments to focus on the assessment requirements of the subject according to the 2018 General Education Program for Secondary School.
Specifically for the literature subject, the test will have a wide coverage, designed to assess the ability to read and understand various types of texts. The test will integrate the assessment of the ability to write paragraphs and essays according to the types of texts, with the content of the writing part related to the text in the reading comprehension section. This requires candidates to have coherent thinking, the ability to analyze and synthesize information, instead of just memorizing.

According to Mr. Vo Kim Bao, a literature teacher at Nguyen Du Secondary School, District 1, the 2018 curriculum for literature has fundamentally changed. To achieve high scores, Mr. Bao advises students to master the skills and knowledge of the subject, and equip themselves with reading comprehension, writing, and argumentation skills.
The exam questions can be from any text that has never been accessed before, requiring candidates to use their reading comprehension skills, perception ability and knowledge of Literature. Therefore, rote learning, memorization, and learning from outlines and sample essays is a "loss".
"In addition to simple reading and writing skills, to get a high score in an essay, students must have in-depth writing skills, expressed through evidence, leading, and solving problems as required by the topic. Students should read more books, newspapers, and pay attention to social issues around them," Mr. Bao concluded.

The 2025 10th grade entrance exam has 76,435 candidates registered. Meanwhile, the total target is 70,070 students, achieving an enrollment rate of about 92%.
Thus, there are only more than 6,000 candidates who failed to pass the public school entrance exam, a sharp decrease compared to the level of about 20,000 candidates in previous years. Meanwhile, the private school system has nearly 19,500 places.
According to the Department of Education and Training, the number of 9th grade students has decreased significantly compared to previous years, which means less competitive pressure to enter public 10th grade.
