Businesses strive to reduce greenhouse gas emissions

CO2 emissions are an inevitable consequence of many human production and living activities. This is one of the main greenhouse gases that cause global warming, directly affecting climate change and the living environment. Controlling and reducing greenhouse gas emissions is becoming an urgent goal in sustainable development strategies. And, Lam Dong businesses are also starting to get used to rationally using resources, reducing emissions towards Net Zero.

ENTERPRISES GET FAMILIAR WITH GREENHOUSE GAS INVENTORIES

In early 2025, Saigon - Lam Dong Beer Joint Stock Company ( Sabeco ) conducted a greenhouse gas inventory at the request of the Department of Industry and Trade of Lam Dong province. Mr. Tran Vu Dinh Nguyen - Head of the Technical and Quality Control Department of the company said that since its establishment, the enterprise has focused on environmental protection, including reducing greenhouse gas emissions. "Sabeco identifies that reducing greenhouse gas emissions is an important goal for sustainable production. Therefore, all activities of the enterprise are aimed at rationally using electricity, water, air resources, etc. to minimize emissions. The greenhouse gas inventory is also an opportunity for us to re-evaluate the process, ensuring that emission reduction activities are carried out effectively," said Mr. Nguyen.

On January 7, 2022, the Government issued Decree No. 06 on "Regulations on greenhouse gas emission reduction and ozone layer protection". The goal of reducing greenhouse gas emissions and switching to clean energy and renewable energy is an opportunity to promote economic restructuring, seize opportunities to improve business competitiveness and take advantage of trade and investment cooperation opportunities for development.

According to the report of the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment , there are 6 manufacturing sectors with large greenhouse gas emissions and need to be inventoried, including: energy; transportation; construction; industry; agriculture, forestry and land use; waste treatment. Of which, energy is the largest emitting sector in Vietnam, accounting for more than 60% of Vietnam's greenhouse gas emissions (about more than 170 million tons of CO2 equivalent), followed by agriculture with 90 million tons of CO2, industrial production with more than 38 million tons of CO2. An important premise to help businesses reduce greenhouse gas emissions is greenhouse gas inventory, which is simply identifying the emission sources and measuring the amount of those emissions, finding production processes with large emission coefficients to have appropriate conversion and elimination orientations.

OPPORTUNITIES FOR GREEN TRANSITION

In Lam Dong province, there are 10 units that must conduct greenhouse gas inventories, including 4 units under the Ministry of Industry and Trade, including: Lam Dong Aluminum One Member Co., Ltd. - TKV, Binh Dien Lam Dong Joint Stock Company, Da Lat Fiber Co., Ltd., Saigon Beer Joint Stock Company - Lam Dong. From the greenhouse gas emissions inventory, enterprises will also develop a roadmap to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. From there, they can accurately determine investment resources for new energy sources, or use energy-saving equipment, reduce emissions, and optimize raw materials and fuel sources in production.

Mr. Dang Trung Kien - Deputy Director of Lam Dong Aluminum Company Limited - TKV said that Lam Dong Aluminum Company is also an enterprise on the greenhouse gas inventory list. This is a relatively new concept for many enterprises and the company is actively cooperating with the authorities to inventory and have effective solutions. Greenhouse gas inventory helps enterprises locate emission sources as well as measures to reduce them.

Mr. Tran Quoc Tuong - Deputy Director of Lam Dong Department of Agriculture and Environment informed that greenhouse gas inventory is the activity of collecting information and data on greenhouse gas emission sources, calculating the amount of greenhouse gas emissions and absorption within a specified range and time. Reducing greenhouse gas emissions, switching to using green energy sources, renewable energy, and absorbing greenhouse gases in production activities are three important steps to shift towards green production and the higher goal of Net Zero. In Lam Dong, more and more businesses are paying more attention to planting trees to create green spaces, developing a circular economy, increasing the ability to absorb greenhouse gases, and reducing emissions into the environment.

According to regulations, in the coming time, each enterprise will be limited to not emitting more than a certain level. Thus, reducing greenhouse gas emissions and absorbing greenhouse gases in production and business activities is not only a trend, but will be mandatory for enterprises to implement.

Lam Dong Department of Industry and Trade has coordinated with the Department of Agriculture and Environment to guide and urge facilities subject to greenhouse gas inventory to submit to competent authorities for appraisal. This will be the basis for developing and implementing measures to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, suitable to the production and business conditions of the facility.
