Known as the most majestic pass, Hai Van Pass has long been a familiar stop for domestic and international tourists when traveling by road. Hai Van Pass was built by the Nguyen Dynasty in the most dangerous position, the area separating Da Nang city and Thua Thien Hue province to easily control the North-South road and Da Nang Bay. After a long period of war, the relic located at an altitude of 490m above sea level has seriously degraded and become shabby.

Many times visiting Hai Van Quan with her family, Mrs. Tran Thi Ngoc Yen from Da Nang city expressed: “Before the restoration, I still came here to visit every year. My family and relatives saw that it was very mossy and shabby, to be honest, they felt very sad. Today, Hai Van Quan is very clean, majestic and touching to the heart.”

At the end of 2021, the Department of Culture and Sports of Da Nang City and the Hue Monuments Conservation Center, Thua Thien Hue Province coordinated to implement the Project to preserve, restore, and promote the value of Hai Van Quan relics, with a total cost of more than 40 billion VND. The project to restore this relic cluster to its original form under the Nguyen Dynasty. Accordingly, relics such as Hai Van Quan, Thien Ha De Nhat Hung Quan, the Nguyen Dynasty citadel wall system, Tru So house, Vu Kho house, the steps from Hai Van Quan to Da Nang city and Thien Ly road from Thien Ha De Nhat Hung Quan to Thua Thien Hue province... were systematically restored.

Mr. Bui Van Tieng, Chairman of the Da Nang City Historical Science Association, assessed that the restoration had the participation of archaeologists and bibliographers, showing the seriousness and meticulousness in restoring the relics. Currently, it can be seen that some bunkers built during the anti-French and anti-American periods have also been kept intact.

According to Mr. Bui Van Tieng, the construction units tried to find materials that were closest to the original: “The two localities were very careful in restoring the relic. There were contributions from archaeology, bibliography and from there many items that were no longer there before have now been restored, this shows that the historical message is always a continuous flow. The Hai Van Quan relic, restored as it is today, will become a highlight for tourism, to learn about the beauty of Hai Van mountain in general and Hai Van Quan in particular”.

After more than 2 years of restoration, Hai Van Quan has been restored to its grandeur and majesty as an important defense system in the south of Hue citadel during the Nguyen Dynasty with items such as the arsenal, headquarters, gates, guard towers, stone walls... Although it has not yet opened to visitors, every day hundreds of domestic and international visitors still visit this special destination on the top of Hai Van Pass.

A foreign tourist who came to visit expressed: “This is a very important and amazing historical site. From the top of this peak, you can admire the majestic and beautiful natural landscape. I am really impressed with this place and hope to visit this unique landscape many times.”

It is expected that the Hai Van Quan National Monument Complex will be completed in the first quarter of this year and soon put into operation, serving the people and tourists. Not only returning the title "Thien ha de nhat hung quan" and the original appearance of this important defense work of the Nguyen Dynasty, the restoration of Hai Van Quan also marks the first time that a national monument has been closely coordinated by relevant localities to manage, restore and operate effectively.

Mr. Huynh Dinh Quoc Thien, Director of Da Nang Museum, who participated in the Hai Van Quan restoration project, said: “The Department of Culture and Sports of Da Nang City as well as the Hue Monuments Conservation Center had to consult with the people and scientists to come up with a restoration solution. And to date, the restoration work has been nearly 95% complete. After the Hai Van Quan historical relic is restored and restored, the two localities will join hands to build regulations for exploitation, management and operation to serve tourists as well as people between the two localities.”
