Recognizing the importance and necessity of professional training and improving journalistic skills for journalists and publicists in the province, in September 2005, the Quang Binh Provincial Journalists Association coordinated with the Vietnam Journalism Training Center to open a training class on "Journalism", taught by the Center's lecturers, Mr. Tran Dinh Thao and Mr. Nguyen Uyen.

Memories of the teacher Nguyen Tri Nien Hinh 1

Late journalist and journalist Nguyen Tri Nien

Most of us students have already had a chance to write; some have received formal training, graduated from journalism, radio, television schools... but there are also those who just write with passion. After 5 days of studying and practicing, we returned to reality and writing, feeling more confident, writing more effectively, just like the proverb: "Without a teacher, you can't do it"!

In April 2006, the Association continued to open a second class, the "Journalism Language" class, taught directly by Mr. Nguyen Tri Nien. We were introduced that he was the Head of the Literature Department, under the Institute of Journalism and Propaganda (now the Academy of Journalism and Propaganda). After retiring from management, he continued to work as a lecturer, teaching Journalism Language here.

Some works of the late journalist Nguyen Tri Nien

Before accepting the invitation from the Provincial Standing Committee to teach the class, he had just published and launched the book "Language of Journalism". Each of us used and considered the book as a handbook of journalism. The book's content includes a number of lectures and articles on language used for journalists, authored by the teacher himself - Journalism theorist, journalist Nguyen Tri Nien. This is truly a meticulous and intellectual research work in the field of journalistic language. For us, although it is still a bit strange and new, when we study it deeply, we realize: Language for journalism is often... "super language"!

Over time, Mr. Nguyen Tri Nien's sharp professional skills and inspirational power have become very familiar to us, his students...

Also through 5 days of teaching, the teacher has equipped us with dozens of lessons, including: " Necessary knowledge of journalists"; "Characteristics of journalistic language"; "Language relationships"; "Taking advantage of the linguistic nature of journalistic language"; "Syntagmatic relationships and importance"; "Journal editing"; "Rules of using single words in Vietnamese"; "Conclusions on linguistic rules"; "Experience in short news and contradictions"; "Threshold and importance of threshold"; "Experience in exceeding threshold"; "Some common notes"... Finally, there was the class summary session on the afternoon of April 12, 2006.

Through that valuable professional training process, we still remember and deeply understand what Mr. Nguyen Tri Nien advised: “Being a journalist means participating directly in political activities. This must be clear from the beginning. Anyone who intends to live or die with the profession must remember it like a nail. Being a journalist means participating directly in political activities, not being vague about this matter. Only when it is clear like this can one be a journalist. Because all newspapers go to readers, to radio listeners. All use language, even if it is visual journalism, the picture is the “main text”, and the words are the “secondary text”, but there cannot be a picture without words. Even if there are words, the words must be like what is worthy of the picture. Even if there are good pictures, the words must be like what is to enhance the picture, to clarify the picture. So in the end, no matter what type of newspaper, language is still an extremely important means of conveying information. Therefore, we want you to pay attention to the effect of language in life. To have the above, that is, to have a sharp political awareness, a language skill to meet professional needs, a journalist must have a very rich knowledge base.

Therefore, when leaving the classroom, through practical activities, generations of students still remember the teacher’s voice and attractive lectures in the subject “Journalism Language”, as well as always remember him with love and respect. Unfortunately, no one in the class that day had… a camera to take a photo with the teacher as a souvenir.

Time has passed quickly, 17 years have passed, I have had certain achievements in journalism and always remember the gratitude of my teachers! Every time I went to Hanoi , I met Mr. Nguyen Uyen again; I had the opportunity to meet Mr. Tran Ba Lan, a great tree of journalism teachers in our country. On such occasions, I earnestly sought out and visited Mr. Nguyen Tri Nien and Mr. Tran Dinh Thao, but due to work conditions and time constraints, the student from Quang Trach (Quang Binh), who was studious and spoke a lot at that time, was still not satisfied with the two teachers.

Suddenly a few years ago, on the occasion of the 96th anniversary of Vietnam Revolutionary Press Day, I was informed by his daughter, Master Nguyen Phuong Anh - Lecturer of the Faculty of Medicine and Pharmacy, Thanh Dong University, that he had passed away. One of the teachers who had taught us, inspired us, and given us the passion for writing had passed away. Fortunately, before that, I asked Dr. Hoang Thi Thu Thuy, his student and colleague, to send me a photo of her with her beloved teacher during his years working in Hue, to remember him on Vietnam Press Day. But in my heart, I always cherished the thought of showing my gratitude to him in every way possible!

Then, in October 2022, my teacher's daughter and I both became students of the 16th Writing Training Class of the Nguyen Du Writing Training Center - Vietnam Writers Association. The class had nearly 100 students, but 1/3 of them were former students of teacher Nguyen Tri Nien. The coincidence helped us become brothers and sisters and together went to Ha Dong to offer incense in memory of the teacher. In front of the teacher's portrait, although I tried to hold back my emotions, I still burst into tears, making my brothers and sisters who went with me wipe away their tears. The cry warmed my heart, helping me to release the regret of not meeting the teacher sooner, even if it was just to look at him and say thank you!

On the occasion of the 98th anniversary of Vietnam Revolutionary Press Day, I write these emotional lines, sincerely thanking the teachers who have devotedly taught us, so that our writers can be more steadfast, and have written pages that are loved by the public like today. I believe that the generations of journalism students are all people who value righteousness, and will forever remember the love of their teachers!!!
