Innovating library operations to better serve readers' needs

Nowadays, with the strong development of audio-visual culture, media and the internet, on-site libraries face many difficulties in attracting readers. Therefore, in addition to serving on-site readers, in recent years, Quang Tri Provincial Library has had many creative ways to effectively promote the capital of books and library materials, contributing to the development of reading culture, improving the intellectual level and spiritual life of the people.

The highlight of the past time is that the Provincial Library has strongly implemented digital transformation, gradually forming a modern library network, creating innovation in library activities. Accordingly, the Quang Tri Provincial Library digital library project was inaugurated and officially put into operation in 2022 with the website address: http:// thuvienso.quangtri.gov.vn, thereby contributing to linking and sharing information resources with the national library system and public libraries of provinces and cities, creating conditions for readers to exploit rich and diverse information.

By the end of 2024, 500,000 pages of documents had been digitally scanned and uploaded to the software to serve readers and 352 processed newspaper volumes had been processed and put into service for readers; more than 266,637 readers had accessed to search for information, and the number of readers registering for online cards had increased gradually. Currently, statistical reporting, ordering additional document sources, exporting document lists - document storage... are all done on digital library management software.

The gradual reform of traditional library operations to digital libraries has created favorable conditions for readers to exploit library documents conveniently, quickly and accurately. In addition, the unit has put into operation the service "Borrow - Return books online". This is a service that Quang Tri Provincial Library cooperates with Viettel Post to support readers to register to borrow and return books at their request based on the digital library management software that the unit has built.

Accordingly, readers in any locality in Quang Tri province can register for membership, choose books, borrow and return books on the library website using a computer with internet connection. Books will be delivered to your home and returned to the library at a preferential price of only 11,000 VND/turn regardless of distance.

With the motto "Bringing books to readers", the Provincial Library continues to promote the circulation of books to localities, facilities, and schools, and proactively discusses and opens new circulation points. In 2024 alone, the unit organized mobile services at nearly 35 schools across the province and 15 sessions on the walking street of Dong Ha City, serving over 23,623 readers and circulating 89,642 documents.

In addition, in 2024, the Provincial Library received more than 3,000 donated, donated, and sponsored books from individuals and organizations to have more books to support schools and community learning centers in districts and towns in the province to build and form basic bookcases. In addition, based on the allocated funding, the Provincial Library also supplemented and processed 654 books, distributed to 5 commune cultural post offices in the districts of Gio Linh, Vinh Linh, Trieu Phong, Hai Lang, Huong Hoa, bringing the number of commune cultural post offices in the whole province provided with books by the Provincial Library to 21 points.

On the other hand, the unit also coordinated with the Vietnam Youth Union, Nghia An Prison, the Provincial Social Policy Bank and the Provincial Young Entrepreneurs Association to donate nearly 150 copies of books to serve prisoners being reformed at Nghia An Prison, Cam Lo District. At the same time, it coordinated with school libraries to organize extracurricular activities, including serving mobile library vehicles at schools in the province.

Coordinate with district and town libraries to organize book rotation to serve readers at community learning points in the area. In particular, the unit has coordinated with the Provincial Youth Union and the Provincial Youth Union to launch the "Border Bookcase" program, calling for support and donations of books and learning materials, and has received more than 17,000 copies of books to classify into 33 bookcases to donate to schools in Huong Hoa and Dakrong districts.

Director of the Provincial Library Ho Ngoc Thien said: “To continue to perform well the assigned tasks, in the coming time, the Provincial Library will continue to innovate and improve the quality of professional activities such as supplementing the capital of books and newspapers; serving readers well in the library and outside the library; building and developing libraries and basic bookcases; continuing to deploy and effectively exploit the Provincial Library Digital Library Project.

In particular, focusing on the application of information technology and digital transformation in library activities to create conditions for people to have equal opportunities in accessing an open and flexible knowledge system with many models, thereby forming habits, developing self-learning capacity, contributing to improving people's knowledge and building a learning society. In addition, the unit will continue to diversify forms of propaganda, promotion, introducing the value of books, the effects of books and encouraging reading to build a healthy reading culture.

Continue to effectively carry out the work of circulating books and newspapers to the grassroots level to help readers have the opportunity to access information and update information regularly; help people improve their understanding and implement the Party's policies and the State's laws, contributing to creating the habit of reading books and newspapers for people...

Organize training courses to improve the level and knowledge of information technology for library staff, gradually upgrade facilities to serve readers to achieve the highest efficiency.
