Change thanks to policy credit capital

Over the past 10 years, the Social Policy Bank, Kien Giang branch, has implemented over 20 policy credit programs, creating conditions for people to have capital to develop the economy, improve their lives and escape poverty.

In Vinh Thong ward (Rach Gia city), in the middle of an area where most people choose to grow rice for a living, Mr. Doan Van Nhieu and his wife choose to grow flowers and vegetables. This choice has helped Mr. Nhieu's family escape poverty and become well-off. Few people know that, to achieve today's success, Mr. Nhieu's family has repeatedly relied on capital from the Social Policy Bank. From 2020 to now, he has twice received loans to create jobs with a total of 80 million VND. Thanks to this timely resource, more than 5,000m² of the family's land is covered with lilies, marigolds, okra, gourds, and squash, bringing in a steady income. "On average, I earn about 700,000 VND per day, and Tet flowers bring in an additional 80 million VND per crop," Mr. Nhieu shared.

Thanks to the humane credit policy and hard work, Nhieu’s family not only changed their lives but also had enough money to send their two children to school. Nhieu’s family is a living proof of the effectiveness and role of social policy credit capital in sustainable poverty reduction.

After nearly 20 years of purchasing agricultural products in the U Minh Thuong buffer zone, where forest land meets fresh water, Ms. Tran Thi Vy, residing in An Minh Bac commune (U Minh Thuong district) soon realized that Mong Linh potatoes are not only delicious but also have great commercial potential. However, local people just "grow and sell", no one signs contracts, no one keeps the price. One year, the price was 14,000 VND/kg, but just a few weeks later, the price dropped to 5,000-6,000 VND/kg. Growers suffered losses, traders shook their heads. Not willing to let her hometown's specialty linger in the canals and fields, in 2018, Ms. Vy decided to establish the Kenh 10 Agricultural Service Cooperative with 56 members and 156 hectares. As Chairwoman of the Board of Directors and Director of Kenh 10 Agricultural Service Cooperative, Ms. Vy proactively approached NFC Food Company Limited ( Dong Nai ), a unit specializing in exporting agricultural products, to persuade them to sign a contract to purchase taro at a stable, long-term price to ensure farmers make a profit. The results were worth the effort, with output increasing steadily every year, from a guaranteed output of only 25 tons in 2021, to 80 tons in 2022 and to 500 tons in 2025. “This year, Mong Linh taro has a good harvest. People are very happy, no longer worried about being forced to lower prices like before. They are even more proud when their hometown taro is processed and exported by the company,” Ms. Vy said.

Currently, Kenh 10 Agricultural Service Cooperative has also signed a contract with Vua Bien Company (Rach Gia City) to supply clean vegetables and fruits. Ms. Vy's goal is to build a closed production and consumption chain, helping people grow safely and sell at the right price. In addition, she is also coordinating with Ho Chi Minh City University of Industry and Trade to implement a project to produce milk from nung tubers, a new and potential direction to increase the value of local agricultural products. Behind Ms. Vy's breakthrough decisions is a silent but extremely important factor: policy credit capital. "Without preferential capital from the Social Policy Bank, I could not rent land to expand the growing area, invest in a greenhouse system, clean seeds or provide technical support to people," Ms. Vy shared.

From scratch, Ms. Vy has brought Mong Linh taro to the world market, so that each crop season is a season of joy, each agricultural product trip is a time when the homeland is mentioned in a foreign land. But more deeply, her story is not just about business, but a living testament to the power of belief when farmers are supported at the right time by policy credit capital. It is the kind capital from the Social Policy Bank that has helped members of the Kenh 10 Agricultural Service Cooperative to rent land, buy seeds, invest in machinery, expand production and confidently start mastering the agricultural value chain. The loan capital not only temporarily "quenchs thirst", but is also a lever for dreams to reach further.

According to statistics, by the end of 2024, the total outstanding policy credit balance in the province reached 6,104.7 billion VND, nearly 3 times higher than in 2014. The whole province has more than 408,000 poor households and policy beneficiaries receiving preferential loans. Of which, more than 59,000 households have escaped poverty, over 47,000 workers have been created jobs. Thanks to that, the poverty rate in the whole province has decreased to 0.998%.
