Specifically, at 7:00 a.m. on June 17, Ngoc Vung Border Guard Station received a report by phone that a fishing boat had a broken engine, encountered a storm, drifted and ran aground on a rocky reef in the southwest area of Ha Mai Island, in the waters of Ngoc Vung Commune, Van Don District. The fishing boat had the license plate HP-90883-TS, captained by Le Van Phuc (born in 1975, registered in Thuy Nguyen, Hai Phong ). The person reporting the news was a crew member on the boat.
After receiving the news, the unit immediately deployed a team of 6 officers and soldiers operating a motorboat to the location of the distressed vessel to check the situation; at the same time, promptly reported to the Provincial Border Guard Command and the People's Committee of Van Don district about the distressed fishing vessel to ask for instructions; informed the 169th Naval Brigade, the 170th Naval Brigade (currently conducting exercises in the Thuong and Ha Mai sea areas) to coordinate the implementation of the rescue plan.
At around 10:30 a.m. the same day, Border Guard officers approached the fishing boat in distress and confirmed that all nine crew members on board were safe. However, the boat was severely damaged, with water flooding into the compartments that had been breached due to the impact with the rocks in the high waves and strong winds.
The working group coordinated to repair the damaged ship's engine, temporarily seal the flooded compartments, pump out the water that had flooded the ship; at the same time, provide medical support, food, and drinking water for the crew on board. At 12:15 p.m. the same day, the ship HP-90883-TS was brought to the Ha Mai border control station wharf for further repairs.
