Exports on the right track
The seafood industry has just held a ceremony to celebrate seafood exports reaching 10 billion USD in 2024 with positive recovery results. Ms. Nguyen Thi Thu Sac, President of the Vietnam Association of Seafood Exporters and Producers (VASEP), said that in the context of 2024 with more difficulties than advantages, but with a creative spirit and flexible adaptability, the Vietnamese seafood industry has achieved impressive results with an export value of 10 billion USD, an increase of 12.7% compared to 2023.
Key products all had positive growth such as: shrimp exports reached 4 billion USD, up 16.7%; tuna nearly 1 billion USD, up 17%; tra fish 2 billion USD, up 9.6%.
VASEP President Nguyen Thi Thu Sac said that the above figures show that the seafood industry is on the right track in sustainable development and increasing the added value of products.
Along with that, Vietnamese seafood enterprises have gradually promoted the application of science and technology in farming and processing processes, not only improving productivity and product quality but also contributing to expanding export markets.
These advances have affirmed the position of Vietnam's seafood industry, enhancing its competitiveness in the international arena.
Impressed with the export results of the fisheries sector, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Nguyen Minh Hang said that fisheries is one of the key agricultural export sectors, with high competitiveness, leading in green transformation and sustainable development of Vietnam.
However, there is still a lot of room for development because according to the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), the global seafood market is estimated to be nearly 180 billion USD and maintains a very positive growth rate. "Therefore, we have every reason to set a further target, not just 10 billion USD," said Ms. Nguyen Minh Hang.
As one of the large-scale shrimp exporting enterprises, Mr. Ho Quoc Luc, Chairman of the Board of Directors of Sao Ta Food Company, commented that with two main export products, shrimp and fish, although there are optimistic figures such as the growth of shrimp and farmed fish output; processing growth and leading to growth in export turnover, this joy is not complete, because there are still many challenges that have not been better handled.
The biggest backlog is the breed. Therefore, it is necessary to monitor and forecast the disease situation as well as have a more timely and effective disease prevention and control regimen in farming.
“Currently, commercial shrimp prices have dropped sharply about 2 months earlier than usual, causing shrimp prices to increase sharply. At this price, each shrimp processing enterprise will suffer a significant loss, even a decrease of 2 USD/kg of finished shrimp,” commented Mr. Ho Quoc Luc.
Dealing with many urgent issues
According to Deputy Minister Nguyen Minh Hang, to achieve the export target, the urgent issue of the fisheries sector is to turn desires and visions into specific plans and actions; turn ideas and initiatives into resources; and turn cooperation commitments into specific results and products.
Because of the current trend of developing a green and sustainable seafood industry in the world, Vietnam also needs to quickly adapt and transform to catch up with the opportunity.
The requirements are how to develop modern farming technology, reduce environmental impacts, protect marine ecosystems, apply biotechnology to improve aquatic breeds; how to diversify aquatic products, especially clean and organic aquatic products to penetrate high-end markets; and it is necessary to further promote digital transformation and e-commerce for agricultural products in general and aquatic products in particular.
Affirming that the export results in 2025 will create momentum for businesses in 2025, Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development Phung Duc Tien said that 2025 will continue to have new challenges for the seafood industry, in which, resolving the IUU yellow card, adapting to climate change, environmental pollution and market barriers will be important goals.
“I also believe that, with determination and creativity, the Vietnamese seafood industry will surpass the 10 billion USD mark in 2025, and move towards the target of 11 billion USD, in the context of improved raw material sources and expanded export markets.
In particular, improving product quality and enhancing the reputation of businesses will help us increase market share and affirm the position of Vietnamese seafood in the international arena," Deputy Minister Phung Duc Tien emphasized.
To achieve the above goal, Deputy Minister Phung Duc Tien affirmed that the Ministry will continue to review policy mechanisms, resolutely remove inappropriate regulations, and create favorable conditions for businesses.
However, in addition to the responsibility of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development and localities, the business community needs to strengthen cooperation and solidarity in accessing, maintaining and expanding, diversifying markets, complying with regulations of Vietnam and import markets, resolutely eliminating manifestations of disunity, unfair competition, violations of the law, and unsustainable development.
To continue expanding the seafood export market, in addition to the markets of China, the US, Japan, the EU... it is necessary to focus on developing the export of seafood products to Halal and Middle Eastern markets...
Promote linkages between units participating in the production chain to improve quality, ensure traceability, and continue to increase the proportion of value-added export items.
Timely notify relevant ministries and branches of any difficulties in the export process for timely handling; continue to proactively propose amendments and improvements to policies to create maximum conditions for production and export activities while still ensuring management requirements and sustainable growth.
