Vietnam - US towards cooperation in technology transfer, application of advanced farming techniques in agriculture

(Chinhphu.vn) - During field trips and working with state governments and businesses in the United States, the delegation of the Vietnamese Ministry of Agriculture and Environment learned about cooperation in technology transfer, application of advanced farming techniques, and solutions for agricultural development in the direction of ecology - intelligence - circulation - sustainability.

The Ministry of Agriculture and Environment (MARD) announced that on June 6 (US time), in Washington DC, Minister of MARD Do Duc Duy attended a roundtable conference with many leading enterprises and corporations of the US-ASEAN Business Council (USABC). This was the final activity of the MARD delegation during this trip, marking the starting point for a sustainable and effective future cooperation between the two countries.

New chapter in two-way agricultural trade cooperation

Eight agreements were signed at the event, with a total value of $1.1 billion. Together with the Memorandums of Understanding (MOUs) signed earlier in Iowa, Ohio and Maryland, the total value of the agreement to purchase US agricultural products is nearly $3 billion.

Speaking to the press, Minister Do Duc Duy affirmed: "Up to this point, it can be said that the working trip has been a great success, bringing very positive results."

Mr. Ted Osius - President of USABC commented: "The agreements today and throughout the trip of the Vietnamese delegation are clear evidence of the positive partnership between the two countries, and at the same time open the door to promising cooperation between two complementary agricultural sectors".

At the first stop of Minister Do Duc Duy's US business trip, Iowa on June 2, Vietnamese agricultural enterprises signed four agreements worth up to 800 million USD to import agricultural products such as corn, soybeans and meat from Iowa over the next 3 years.

Ohio is the next stop for the delegation of the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment and Vietnamese businesses. On June 4, under the witness of the Ministry’s leaders and representatives of Ohio agricultural associations, the Vietnamese delegation continued to sign contracts worth more than 600 million USD to import more products such as corn, corn meal and soybeans from this state.

During a short working session in Maryland on the morning of June 6, specialized agencies of the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment witnessed the signing ceremony of about 300 million USD worth of agricultural products and meat imports from the United States.

US businesses join the green growth goal

During the signing ceremony, Minister Do Duc Duy discussed with USABC about cooperation to realize Vietnam's Net Zero goal. Here, US businesses exchanged initiatives, ideas and expectations for cooperation with Vietnam in technology transfer and green production.

Mr. Miguel Bates-Bingosa - Vice President of International Relations of Citi Group - shared that Citi just celebrated the 30th anniversary of establishing an office in Vietnam last year. In line with Citi's global commitment to promote the circular economy , the Group has implemented many specific activities in Vietnam, contributing to mitigating the impact of climate change.

In 2022, Citi completed its first voluntary carbon credit transaction from a home appliance manufacturer (stoves, water purifiers) serving vulnerable, low-income communities in Vietnam.

"As a financial intermediary, Citi wants to accompany Vietnam in developing the climate finance market, by providing verified carbon credits to global clients, helping to reduce emissions while improving livelihoods and health for rural people," said a Citi representative.

Atmo CEO Alex Levy also expressed his hope to cooperate with the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment and the National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting to apply AI to help Vietnam improve its forecasting capacity and respond to extreme weather. He said that right after today's meeting, Atmo will travel to Hanoi to work directly with Deputy Minister Le Cong Thanh and relevant parties.

Mr. Alex promoted the idea of ​​building joint technology innovation centers between Vietnam and US enterprises of the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment. Atmo is ready to accompany Vietnam's leading meteorological centers, aiming to provide weather forecasting services for disaster management.

At the event, in front of Vietnamese and US press, Minister Do Duc Duy shared a summary of the results of the working trip of the delegation of 50 agencies, representatives of associations and agricultural enterprises accompanying the Minister to the US in the first week of June.

First of all, through the chain of agricultural trade connection activities, Vietnamese enterprises have signed a series of MOUs with a total value of nearly 3 billion USD. This can be considered an unexpected success, demonstrating the initiative and determination of Vietnamese agricultural enterprises in finding partners.

Second, forums and meetings with the US have created conditions for the business communities of the two countries to have more information about the market, consumption trends, as well as the development of agriculture, forestry and fisheries of each side. Thereby, opening up opportunities for businesses of the two countries to access, expand markets, implement investment projects, and promote business cooperation in the coming time.

Third, through field trips and working with state governments and local businesses, the Vietnamese delegation learned about cooperation in technology transfer, application of advanced farming techniques, and solutions for agricultural development in the direction of ecology - intelligence - circulation - sustainability.

Finally, through meetings and contacts with representatives of the US Congress and politicians, state governments, the business community and local people, the Vietnamese delegation clearly demonstrated its national stance and commitment to promoting agricultural trade, moving towards harmonizing and balancing the trade balance between the two countries.

Minister Do Duc Duy emphasized: "The Vietnamese Government highly values ​​the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership with the United States and is constantly striving to nurture this relationship to new heights."
