Responding to VTC News, Mr. Nguyen Xuan Anh - Director of the Earthquake and Tsunami Warning Center (Institute of Earth Sciences ) said that at 11:17 on May 16, in Muong Cha district (Dien Bien province), an earthquake measuring 5 on the Richter scale occurred. The focal depth was about 10km.
The Institute of Earth Sciences assessed this earthquake as having a level 2 natural disaster risk in the epicenter area.
The Earthquake Information and Tsunami Warning Center continues to monitor this earthquake.
This afternoon, while preparing dinner for her family, Ms. Hoa (residing in Muong Cha district, Dien Bien) suddenly felt the floor shake slightly, followed by a stronger shaking accompanied by the clanging sound of pots and pans colliding.
“I was so scared that I hugged my child and ran out into the yard. The neighbors also rushed out, someone shouted ‘earthquake, earthquake!’” Ms. Hoa said.
Another resident in Muong Cha said: “The feeling of the ground moving under my feet was very clear.”
Not only in Muong Cha, the shaking phenomenon was also recorded in Dien Bien Phu city and neighboring districts such as Tuan Giao, Muong Ang. People described that the metal roof, glass doors and household items shook and collided, making a creaking sound for about 3-5 seconds.
Dien Bien is located in the Northwest region, where there are two major seismic fault zones: Dien Bien - Lai Chau and Song Ma - Son La. Therefore, earthquakes in this area are a cyclical geological phenomenon.
