In an interview with Yonhap, coach Kim Sang-sik revealed that he had a special plan to carry out with Nguyen Xuan Son after the second leg of the 2024 AFF Cup final. However, this wish did not come true because the striker of the Vietnamese team was hospitalized before the match ended.
"I'm not really strong enough anymore, but the players kept asking me to jump. I promised them that if we won the championship, I would jump. I planned to jump with Xuan Son, a player from Brazil. It's sad that we couldn't do it together because Son was injured," said coach Kim Sang-sik.
Coach Kim Sang-sik dances after winning the 2024 AFF Cup championship.
When he first took over the Vietnam national team, Mr. Kim promised to recreate the dance that had caused a stir on social media when celebrating his first championship with the Jeonbuk club (South Korea). He said he would do this if the Vietnam national team won the AFF Cup 2024.
The Korean coach kept his promise. He danced right on the Rajamangala Stadium pitch after defeating Thailand in the second leg of the final. Later, in the locker room, captain Do Duy Manh asked coach Kim Sang-sik to do it again. He happily did it.
"To be honest, I didn't expect much. I'm very happy. I didn't think I could achieve such good results, winning the championship after only 8 months of working," coach Kim Sang-sik told a Korean newspaper.
The 48-year-old coach reiterated the secret to success, which included the contribution of Mr. Park Hang Seo: "I try to work with the players like an older brother. I often joke and behave intimately with them, but I am always cold and strict on the field.
Because the national team only gathered in the short time, I didn't have time to build the tactics and philosophy I was pursuing. Mr. Park gave me detailed advice on everything related to the players, from their habits to their details and personalities. If I were alone, I wouldn't have been able to understand those things so quickly."
