Score prediction: U23 Thailand lost to Indonesia for the third consecutive time

This is a rare occasion in history that U23 Thailand is considered the weaker team against U23 Indonesia, when the two teams meet again in the semi-finals of the U23 Southeast Asian Championship taking place at 8:00 p.m. today (July 25).

At all levels, Thai football has always dominated Indonesia. In the U23 team alone, Thailand has faced Indonesia 13 times since 2007, and won 9 times.

But if we narrow down the scope to recent years, Indonesia is the better team. The Thais certainly cannot forget the painful defeat with a total score of 2-5 in the final of the 2023 SEA Games.

That defeat was also accompanied by a series of violent clashes, which resulted in both teams receiving heavy penalties. Just a few months later, Thailand U23 was once again defeated by Indonesia (lost 1-3) when they met again in the semi-finals of the 2023 Southeast Asian U23 Championship.

The two consecutive losses recently showed that the balance of power between Thailand and Indonesia is increasingly reversed. In this year's tournament, U23 Indonesia also had a more impressive performance when they topped the group with Malaysia and the Philippines.

On the contrary, Thailand only won big against Timor Leste, then was held to a draw by Myanmar. This is clearly not an achievement that satisfies Thai fans.

In addition, Indonesia's home field advantage helps them be rated by bookmakers as the "overdog" in this match.

Specifically, U23 Indonesia is given a handicap of 0.25 goals for the whole match and equal in the first half. The over/under ratio is 2 goals for the whole match and 0.75 goals for the first half.

The reason for such a low score is because of the poor attack of both teams. Right after the group stage, the president of the Indonesian Football Federation (PSSI) - Mr. Erick Thohir spoke up to remind the home team's strikers "don't just score against weak teams".

U23 Indonesia scored 8 goals against Brunei, then only scored 1 goal against the Philippines (actually an own goal) and failed to score against Malaysia.

In both of those matches, Indonesia controlled the game, creating many dangerous situations but continuously missing opportunities. The same problem appeared with Thailand when they faced Myanmar.

However, this encounter still promises to be extremely attractive when Thailand is eager for revenge, while Indonesia wants to prove its powerful position with home field advantage. The two teams promise to play an open game in this match.

Prediction: 1-1 draw in the first half, Indonesia win 3-1 in the end.
