Cost of applying for a job after graduation in English speaking countries

To be allowed to stay in the US to work after graduation for one year, Vietnamese international students can apply for the Optional Practical Training (OPT) program of the US Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS). Starting from April 2024, the cost of submitting Form I-765 (application for work authorization - PV) in the OPT application process has increased from 410 USD (10.6 million VND) to 470 USD (12.2 million VND).

The same fee applies when international students extend their OPT for 2 more years if they study STEM ( science , technology, engineering, mathematics). If urgent, the cost of expediting the OPT application and extension process will increase from 1,500 USD (39.1 million VND) to 1,685 USD (43.9 million VND) from February 2024. Thus, the total cost of applying to stay and work after graduation in the US can be up to more than 56 million VND.

Meanwhile, Australia has started increasing the fee for a post-study work visa (subclass 485) to AUD 2,235 (VND 37.7 million) from 2025, and this is the second increase in less than a year. If you are traveling with a relative aged 18 or older, the applicant will need to pay an additional AUD 1,115 (VND 18.8 million), and this figure for relatives under 18 is AUD 560 (VND 9.4 million). This does not include other costs such as health check-ups, criminal records, etc.

In case of wanting to extend the 485 visa if having studied and worked in areas outside the cities of Melbourne, Sydney, Brisbane, the applicant must pay a fee of 880 AUD (14.8 million VND), up from 765 AUD (12.9 million VND). The additional fee for accompanying relatives aged 18 and over and under 18 is 440 AUD (7.4 million VND) and 225 AUD (3.8 million VND), respectively, the Australian Department of Home Affairs informed.

In Canada, the fee for a post-graduation work permit (PGWP) is CAD 155 (VND 2.9 million), but applicants must pay an additional CAD 100 (VND 1.9 million) for the "open work permit holder" fee. Thus, the total fee to be paid is VND 4.8 million, not including the biometric fee if required (CAD 85 - VND 1.6 million) and the fee if the study permit expires (CAD 355 - VND 6.8 million).

In addition to the above fees payable to Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC), international students may also have to pay additional fees to third parties to complete their applications, such as criminal record fees, medical examination fees, or fees to the Visa Application Centre (VAC) to submit biometric data and other relevant documents on behalf of the applicant.

Another English-speaking country, the UK, currently requires applicants to pay a fee of £880 (VND31.1 million) if they want to apply for a graduate work visa. This figure does not include a health surcharge of £1,035 (VND36.4 million) per year, and the specific amount to be paid will be announced when applicants submit their application, the UK government said. Normally, international students are allowed to stay and work after graduation for 2-3 years, so the total cost is VND103.9-140.3 million.

The UK has also increased the post-study work visa application fee from April 2025, by £58 (VND2 million) compared to before. However, if you work in the public health sector after paying the health surcharge, you can apply for a refund of this surcharge.

Meanwhile, Vietnamese students must pay a fee of NZ$1,670 (VND26.2 million) to apply for a post-study work visa (PSW) in New Zealand. To apply, applicants must have at least NZ$5,000 (VND78.4 million) in their bank account to prove they have enough money to cover their living expenses. In addition, applicants will need to submit a medical examination result if requested by the New Zealand Immigration Department.

Notably, New Zealand also increased the PSW visa application fee at the end of 2024 from NZD 700 (VND 10.9 million).
