Traveling is not just about checking in…

In the first two months of this year, Quang Nam welcomed approximately 1.395 million visitors (a 17% increase compared to the same period last year); revenue from tourism and accommodation reached approximately 1,880 billion VND (a 20% increase compared to the same period in 2024).

From the above figures, it can be seen that tourism contributes significantly to the economy . However, how to increase revenue per visitor, thereby further increasing tourism revenue, remains a difficult problem. The issue of tourism revenue not being commensurate with the number of visitors to Quang Nam has been mentioned before. In 2019, the revenue per visitor in Quang Nam was only about 1.8 million VND; while Da Nang achieved over 3.5 million VND.

A tourism business based in the province stated that some tourists travel primarily to check in and take photos rather than spend much, so revenue per tourist is not high.

Regarding check-ins, it's evident that in recent years, tourism has evolved from a simple journey of discovery into a "check-in culture." Some people travel to popular destinations primarily to take photos to show off on social media before leaving without dedicating much time to experiencing, exploring, or using other services.

Undeniably, stunning photos and videos with beautiful angles shared on social media have helped many destinations gain popularity. This widespread reach allows some destinations to attract a large number of tourists without incurring significant advertising costs. However, tourism solely for the purpose of checking in also raises concerns; if tourists only come to take pictures without eating, drinking, or staying overnight, then those working in the tourism industry and local residents will not benefit much from the influx of tourists.

For tourism to be sustainable, travelers need to strike a balance between "check-in" tourism and experiential tourism, learning to "slow down" while traveling.

Instead of just skimming through destinations to take a few beautiful photos, taking the time to learn about the culture and people, documenting the stories behind each place visited; enjoying the cuisine, and participating in experiences will add many more wonders to your trip.

Locally, those involved in tourism also need to develop more attractive products and create more interesting experiential activities at destinations. Nature exploration tours, cooking classes, cultural exchanges, etc., could encourage tourists to stay longer and spend more.

With the increasing development of technology and social media, travel check-ins are a powerful tool for promoting destinations. However, if tourism stops there, it will only bring superficial value.

Tourism should aim for long-term values, where tourists not only bring back beautiful photos but also delve deeper into exploration and experience, creating memorable moments; making a positive contribution to the local community, rather than chasing fleeting trends.
