Green pillar tourism for sustainable development

QTO - In the early winter dawn, under the giant propellers, tourists are passionately capturing beautiful peaceful moments right on the land that was once torn by war. Quang Tri today is not only beautiful in check-in photos, but tourism has become a green pillar, creating momentum for economic development, connecting agriculture, logistics and renewable energy, realizing a vision of sustainable and comprehensive development for the future.

Pillar Link

The orientation of Quang Tri province in the period 2025-2030 is to connect tourism to create a green, sustainable, comprehensive and integrated socio-economic development model, with 4 main pillars: Energy, logistics, tourism and green agriculture.

According to Mr. Dang Dong Ha, Deputy Director of the Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism, on that basis, the province will develop transport and logistics infrastructure to connect economic zones, promote the attraction of renewable energy projects to provide clean energy, develop green tourism based on local products and experiential tourism, and encourage ecological and organic agriculture and traditional craft villages.

From this vision, Quang Tri province will expand its tourism development space, reaching out strongly, from North to South, from the sea to the Truong Son range, connecting across borders through the East-West Economic Corridor. One of the most important driving forces for Quang Tri tourism development is transport and logistics infrastructure. The synchronous investment in the North-South expressway system, deep-water seaports, airports, and the three international border gates of Lao Bao, La Lay, and Cha Lo is opening up a space of potential regional connectivity.

Thanks to this network, tourists from major centers such as Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City or Laos and Thailand can easily access the province's tourist attractions in just a few hours of travel. The development of logistics not only helps shorten the journey, but also reduces transportation costs, promotes MICE tourism, cross-border tourism, and forms a modern service supply chain.

“We are focusing on connecting inter-regional and international tourism routes, linking tourism centers with logistics infrastructure systems, seaports, airports and border gates. When logistics operates effectively, tourism will have the opportunity to make a strong breakthrough,” Mr. Dang Dong Ha affirmed.

Green destination

In the Khe Sanh highlands, visitors can pick ripe red coffee bunches by themselves, enjoy a cup of roasted coffee on the spot and hear about the journey of building a clean coffee brand from the sunny and windy land. This unique experience is a clear demonstration of the development of green agricultural tourism from the local characteristics.

Mr. Tran Thai Thien, CEO of the SVN Ecological Cooperative Union, believes that developing green tourism must start with transparency and benefit sharing. Each product, from coffee beans to experience tours, is attached with a QR code to trace the green journey; 20% of profits are reinvested in the community to develop infrastructure, scholarships and plant trees.

According to Mr. Thien, the model can only be sustainable when there is a multi-stakeholder connection between cooperatives, scientists, businesses, tourism and the government, especially the companionship of businesses in Quang Tri and neighboring areas in promoting, consuming products and attracting tourists.

The reality of many rural tourist areas shows that connecting agriculture with tourism not only creates livelihoods for people but also preserves the landscape and culture of the countryside. Lessons from the success of Tan Hoa village - the best tourist village in the world in 2023 has affirmed that when tourism is closely linked to local culture, promoting indigenous elements is the core foundation for building and developing sustainable tourism.

From wind power fields on the coast or in the high mountains, Quang Tri is forming a unique “green energy tourism map”. The image of tourists checking in among giant turbines or visiting renewable energy models has become a new and attractive experience.

In recent years, in addition to taking advantage of the landscape from energy projects to build unique tourism products, Quang Tri has also encouraged businesses to switch to a green operating model, in which Oxalis Company Limited - a leading adventure tourism operator - is one of the pioneers. With a comprehensive Net Zero implementation roadmap, Oxalis has invested in solar power systems for all tourism facilities, such as Chay Lap Farmstay, Blue Diamond Camp, Tu Lan Lodge... This system helps significantly reduce grid electricity, providing clean energy for tourism activities, and at the same time becoming a reference model for other local businesses. The company is also vigorously implementing training in the field of Net Zero tourism, with the goal of contributing to making Quang Tri a pioneering destination in low-carbon tourism.

“If you want to go far, go together”

The tourism development orientations associated with the three pillars of the local economy not only create momentum for the tourism industry, but also contribute to the formation of a circular economic development model, in which tourism is the core to spread green values to other areas. "If you want to go far, you have to go together", to turn the vision into reality, it requires the support of local authorities and the business community. Management levels are responsible for building mechanisms, policies, and infrastructure to support green tourism. Enterprises need to be strong, proactive in product innovation, invest in clean energy, and connect with agriculture and craft villages.

And in particular, local people must be an important link in the supply chain of tourism products. This companionship turns the idea of circular economy, experiential tourism and renewable energy into concrete actions that tourists can feel right on each trip.

Deputy Director of the Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism Dang Dong Ha affirmed that in the coming time, the tourism industry will focus on developing green and sustainable tourism, with a commitment to reducing emissions, towards the Net Zero target; building green tourism products associated with traditional craft villages, farms, and organic agricultural products to create attractive, unique, sustainable experiences and attract tourists; promoting green tourism on domestic and foreign media and digital platforms.

When tourists come to Quang Tri today, they not only seek out history, but also feel a new vitality, both modern, friendly, and… green. A cup of Khe Sanh coffee in the middle of the mountains and forests, a picture in the middle of a wind farm or a trip across the highway towards the beaches, visiting caves… all tell the story of a Quang Tri that is changing strongly. In a land that has gone through the smoke and fire of war, tourism is gradually asserting its position to connect, spread and lead the way for sustainable development.
