According to German government spokesman Steffen Hebestreit, Chancellor Scholz welcomed Ukrainian President Volodymir Zelensky's goodwill in agreeing to an unconditional ceasefire for 30 days.

Mr. Scholz also emphasized the importance of the leadership role played by US President Donald Trump in achieving a ceasefire and lasting peace for the Eastern European country in conflict with Russia.

In addition, Chancellor Scholz reaffirmed Berlin's continued solidarity with Kiev and assured that Germany will continue to support Ukraine in close coordination with European and international partners, until a comprehensive and lasting peace is achieved.

With Russia, the German leader called on Moscow to end its daily attacks on Ukrainian cities and civilian infrastructure to pave the way towards peace.

In a related development, on the same day, March 15, President of the European Commission (EC) Ursula von der Leyen said that Russia needs to support the ceasefire agreement with Ukraine to lead to sustainable peace.

The EC president thanked British Prime Minister Keir Starmer for chairing a video conference with around 25 other leaders in an effort to secure any ceasefire that might be reached in the eastern European country.

"We will continue to support the strengthening of Ukraine and its armed forces... Finally, we will strengthen European defense efforts through the ReArm Europe program, increasing defense spending," she stressed.

Russia has not yet responded to the above information.
