During the street meetings, he repeatedly stated that a cultural street cannot be without a reading room and newspaper. Reading books is the way to learn how to live, how to get rich. People look at the streets, they have everything. In the following days, he went to each house to appeal. The street chief did it thoroughly, and the street's reading room and newspaper were born very quickly.
On the opening day, the street chief was very happy. A few days before, he had continuously announced on the street's public address system the significance of building and launching the reading room and newspaper. The people in the street listened and saw that what he said was right. But sadly, after the opening of the reading room, the newspaper was open all day but the number of people who came to read could be counted on the fingers of one hand. Gradually, the reading room was only open during the street meeting. Then that was no longer maintained. Even some people who were very enthusiastic about the policy and supported the funding to build the reading room and newspaper never came once. The bookshelves were covered with dust. Then no one knew where the books in the reading room went. Until one day, there was an event in the street, I passed by and saw only empty shelves. The street chief explained that reading culture has changed a lot now, people have switched to reading e-books instead of the traditional method of reading on paper. The end of the reading room was quiet, unlike when it opened.
Then the street chief called for support to buy computers to put in the street cultural house so that people could come to read newspapers and look up documents like in this street or that street. His project this time did not receive the same support as before.
Investing in cultural institutions, including reading rooms and newspaper rooms, is necessary. But investment needs to be linked to promoting value, not just buying things to keep up with the rest of the village and avoid being labeled as inferior to others.
Earlier this summer, when he went to raise funds for organizing activities for children, the street chief smiled brightly and said that this was the last time he would go to raise funds, because he was preparing to merge the street. He listed the cultural and sports facilities in the street, whether they would be used in the future or not, they would forever be symbolic works of the people's hearts and strength in the neighborhood. The works he mentioned included a cultural house, a broadcasting system, a badminton court, a ping pong table, a swing, and security cameras, but the reading room - which was also the project he was most passionate about - was not mentioned.
Perhaps he realized his mistake in building and managing the reading room and newspaper was not appropriate. It's just that he realized his mistake when he was about to leave his position. Hopefully, his successor will accept that, so that there will be no more stories of mobilizing people's strength for "noisy" things following the trend.
