Railway to Can Gio: Ho Chi Minh City proposes to the Prime Minister to apply special mechanism to speed up the project

According to the Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee, the Ho Chi Minh City planning for the period 2021-2030, with a vision to 2050 approved by the Prime Minister, has established a potential planning for an urban railway connecting the center to the district. Can Gio (line 12).

The route is 48.7km long, starting at Nguyen Van Linh Street (between the intersection with Nguyen Thi Thap Street and Ly Phuc Man Street, Binh Thuan Ward, District 7) - passing through Nguyen Luong Bang - Rung Sac and ending at the 39ha land adjacent to the Can Gio coastal urban tourism project (Long Hoa Commune, Can Gio District).

This urban railway line has also been updated and supplemented in the Project to adjust the general planning of Ho Chi Minh City to 2040, with a vision to 2060, which is currently being appraised by the Ministry of Construction and submitted to the Prime Minister for approval in the near future.

On March 17, Vingroup Corporation sent a document to the City People's Committee proposing to invest in an urban railway connecting the city center with Can Gio district. Currently, the City People's Committee is coordinating with the investor to promote and implement the next steps.

According to the Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee, the list of projects attached to Resolution 188 of the National Assembly on piloting a number of specific and special mechanisms and policies to develop urban railways in Ho Chi Minh City and Hanoi does not include the urban railway line connecting the center to Can Gio district.

Therefore, the City People's Committee proposed that the Prime Minister agree on the policy of adding this urban railway line to the attached project list. Resolution 188 to speed up the investment process. At the same time, the City People's Committee is assigned to urgently coordinate with the Ministry of Construction to report to the Government for consideration and approval of the above proposal as soon as possible.

Scale of high-speed urban railway project to Can Gio proposed by Vingroup

At the groundbreaking ceremony of the Can Gio coastal urban tourism area - Vinhomes Green Paradise on April 19, Vingroup Corporation informed that the coastal urban area will be connected to the center of Ho Chi Minh City by a high-speed urban railway. With a maximum speed of up to 250km/h, people and tourists from Phu My Hung area (District 7) to the Can Gio coastal urban tourism area will only take about 16 minutes.

According to preliminary research, the high-speed urban railway has an initial capital of about VND102,370 billion (USD4 billion), invested in the form of public-private partnership (PPP) - BOO (build-own-operate) contract.

Vingroup proposed to use its own capital and mobilized capital to invest and is expected to complete the project within three years (from 2025 - 2028).
