At 39 years and 220 days, Edin Džeko is still scoring in European competition

In the early morning of October 24, the veteran Bosnian striker scored a goal in Fiorentina's convincing 3-0 win over Rapid Wien in the second round of the UEFA Conference League qualifying round. This goal marked a memorable milestone in a career spanning more than two decades, starting with his professional football debut in 2003.

While Fiorentina are struggling in Serie A, without a win after seven games and just three draws, they have been impressive in the Conference League. Under coach Stefano Pioli, “La Viola” won both of their first two games, beating Sigma Olomouc 2-0 and then winning 3-0 at Rapid Wien. With a goal difference of +5, and three away goals, Fiorentina are currently top of the Conference League table, ahead of other unbeaten teams such as AEK Larnaca, Celje, Lausanne-Sport, Samsunspor and Mainz thanks to their impressive scoring record.

This achievement continues Fiorentina's remarkable run in the Conference League, which saw them reach the final two years ago and reach the semi-finals last season. With their current lead, the purple team are aiming for a direct place in the round of 16, which is reserved for the top eight teams, while teams from 9th to 24th will have to compete in the play-offs.

For Džeko himself, this historic goal not only proves that age is just a number but also solidifies his position as an icon, the "tree of life" of Bosnian and Fiorentina football.
