When mentioning specialties from the "land of seven mountains" (Tri Ton district, An Giang province), people often immediately think of familiar names like grilled chicken, papaya salad, grilled beef rice... However, this region also has an equally attractive dish that is loved by many diners: Cambodian-style grilled frog.
Around 4 PM, rows of charcoal grills for roasting frogs line provincial road 948 towards Tri Ton district, emitting plumes of smoke. The fragrant aroma of grilled frogs wafts directly into the noses of passersby, making it impossible for them to resist stopping.
Ms. Thao, the owner of a grilled frog restaurant here, said that this dish originated from the Khmer people and is prepared according to Cambodian flavors.
Regarding the preparation method, after the frogs are cleaned and drained, the frog legs are finely minced and mixed with pork belly, then combined with various spices such as kaffir lime leaves, turmeric, and lemongrass to create aroma. This mixture is then stuffed into the frog's belly, and then placed in bamboo skewers and grilled over charcoal.
When grilled, the frog is brushed with a special sauce to create a delicious, rich flavor and an attractive golden color that is incredibly distinctive.
Furthermore, one of the elements that makes this dish so appealing is the dipping sauce made from young tamarind mixed with ginger and garlic. The harmonious combination of spices in the sauce makes it irresistible to diners, offering a unique flavor.
A serving of grilled frog includes frog skewers and sauce, at a fairly cheap price, only 15,000 to 20,000 VND for a plump skewer of grilled frog meat. Customers can buy it as a snack or eat it with rice; both are delicious.
Ms. Nguyen Thi Thu Hien (26 years old, residing in Can Tho ) said that she and her family are absolutely "crazy about" this local specialty. Every time she visits An Giang, she stops by Tri Ton to enjoy grilled frog, and it's always delicious. Spending the weekend enjoying the beautiful scenery and savoring delicious mountain cuisine is a wonderful experience.
