On December 19th, key projects and constructions across the country will simultaneously commence and be inaugurated to celebrate the 14th National Congress of the Communist Party of Vietnam.

Of these, EVN plans to start construction on and inaugurate 18 projects, including 9 projects that will begin construction and 9 projects that will be put into operation.

Specifically, three large-scale power generation projects will be commenced: Quang Trach 2 Power Plant, Huong Phung 1 Wind Power Plant, and Cong Hai 1 Wind Power Plant (phase 2).

The Quang Trach 2 power plant is a large-scale project with a capacity of 1,500 MW, comprising two units, with a total investment of approximately VND 52,490 billion, utilizing modern combined-cycle gas turbine technology. The project is included in the list of important LNG thermal power plants prioritized for investment under the revised Power Development Plan VIII. Previously, the project was approved to use coal fuel, but the Government has approved the conversion to LNG to align with Resolution No. 55-NQ/TW, which emphasizes the roadmap for reducing the proportion of coal-fired power, limiting emissions, and protecting the environment.

According to the plan, Unit 1 of the Quang Trach II LNG Thermal Power Plant will begin generating electricity in Q4/2028, Unit 2 in Q1/2029, and the entire project will be completed in 2030. Once operational, the plant is expected to supply approximately 9 billion kWh per year, contributing to improved reliability, voltage quality, and ensuring the security of electricity supply for the national power grid.

The Huong Phung 1 wind power plant, with a total investment of VND 1,089 billion, was built with the goal of supplementing clean energy sources for the national power grid and meeting the growing electricity demand of Quang Tri province. The project is expected to lay the foundation for wind power development in the Central region, aligning with the sustainable energy transition orientation of the Government, the Ministry of Industry and Trade, and EVN.

The Cong Hai 1 wind power plant, phase 2, with a total investment of 905 billion VND, will supplement the national power grid with clean electricity and serve the electricity needs of the Ninh Thuan area (now part of Khanh Hoa province). The project's implementation further affirms the priority given to developing renewable energy, gradually reducing dependence on traditional fossil fuels.

Along with power generation projects, EVN also commenced construction on many important power grid projects such as the Phu Quoc 220 kV Substation, the Hong Ngu 220 kV Substation, and upgrading the capacity of the Thanh My 500 kV Substation… in order to enhance transmission capacity, relieve power congestion, and improve the stability of the power system.

Also on December 19th, the Hoa Binh Hydropower Plant Expansion Project will be fully inaugurated, after Unit 1 began generating electricity in August. When fully operational, the project will increase peak power generation capacity, effectively utilizing excess water released during the flood season, thereby improving the operational efficiency of the national power grid.
