On May 4, many users of the Messenger messaging app (owned by Facebook’s Meta) discovered that content related to data shared between members of the conversation had disappeared for unknown reasons. Just 2 days ago, the software crashed globally and quickly returned after nearly 30 minutes, but Meta did not provide further information.
Currently, when users check the history of shared data (including photos, videos , files, links) in the conversation, they will see that this area is empty. Some images sent from the end of April until now are still displayed, but older content is no longer available. The Files and Links sections are completely empty.
Shared media appears to be "hidden" due to a programming error, not deleted from Messenger's storage servers
However, users can re-display the current image and video (Media) section (not yet available for Files and Links) by opening the conversation on the Messenger application on the computer and scrolling the mouse to scroll back to the previous time. Every time you go back to the time when you shared an image or video, that content will automatically appear on the right side, where the Media that was exchanged during the conversation is displayed.
This also suggests that the issue is related to the display and “scan” of Messenger history, not the servers that host the aforementioned content formats. And there is no story of old photos and videos being “deleted” in an unspecified incident as some Facebook groups have shared.
This is an unusual and unprecedented incident for the platform. Since separating from Facebook to become an independent application in 2014, Messenger has mainly encountered connection errors. In early March 2023, Facebook's leadership revealed its intention to merge the messaging application back into the social networking platform to enhance the experience of following news and sharing content for users with friends and relatives.
