FAW Bestune Pony - super cheap electric car from 96 million VND to Vietnam

The Vietnamese electric car market may soon welcome a new mini electric car model called FAW Bestune Pony from China, competing directly with its "compatriot" Wuling Mini EV.

Recently, the online community has been buzzing with the news that the Vietnamese electric car market is about to welcome a new mini electric car model. Thai Binh Hung Thinh Joint Stock Company (Thai Hung Corp) posted a picture of a fleet of electric FAW Bestune Pony cars appearing at the company's factory in Thai Binh.

Images of FAW Bestune Pony electric cars appearing in Thai Binh have sparked speculation about plans to distribute this model in Vietnam. In the domestic Chinese market, the price of FAW Bestune Pony cars has two versions with prices ranging from 26,900 - 31,900 yuan (equivalent to 96 - 114 million VND).

The FAW Bestune Pony electric car has a compact design with a 3-door, 4-seat configuration, with overall dimensions of length x width x height of 3,000 x 1,510 x 1,630 mm, and a wheelbase of 1,953 mm. Compared to the Wuling Mini EV, the Pony is slightly larger in size.

In terms of operation, Bestune Pony uses an electric motor with a capacity of 20 kW and torque of 85 Nm, providing a maximum speed of 100 km/h - equivalent to Wuling Mini EV.

This small mini electric car has two battery options: the 9.4 kWh version for a travel distance of 122 km and the 13.9 kWh version for an operating range of 170 km (according to CLTC standards).

The interior of the Bestune Pony is minimalist with a 7-inch digital display and no center console. The traditional gear lever is replaced by a rotary knob on the dashboard. The area in front of the passenger seat integrates a basic entertainment system with radio, Bluetooth connection and USB port.

In terms of safety equipment, the car has seat belts, driver airbag, rear camera to assist parking and tire pressure warning. The suspension system includes McPherson independent suspension in the front and independent multi-link suspension in the rear.

Bringing Bestune Pony to Vietnam is part of Thai Hung Corp's electric vehicle development strategy. The company signed a memorandum of understanding with Roding Mobility (Germany) in July 2023, aiming to research and develop small electric vehicles.

Roding Mobility will act as a technical consultant, supervising production implementation, while Thai Hung will undertake assembly in Vietnam. In the first phase, Thai Hung Corp will focus on urban electric vehicles (city cars) according to the European L7e standard, with an expected output of 6,000 vehicles in the first three years. After that, the company plans to expand its product portfolio of class A electric vehicles.

Thai Hung's factory in Thai Binh, with an investment capital of 9.5 million Euros (equivalent to 254 billion VND), has an assembly capacity of 10,000 electric vehicles/year. In addition, the company is researching the expansion of the Thai Hung Electric Vehicle Complex with a scale of 100 - 200 hectares, expected to be implemented from the end of 2025.

If completed, the project could increase annual output to 50,000 - 100,000 vehicles and participate in contract production for other electric vehicle brands, also expected to be Chinese.
