Myanmar media on April 22 quoted a source from the country's military government as saying that a fire broke out at Mandalay University in the city of the same name on March 28, right after a 7.7-magnitude earthquake flattened many buildings in central Myanmar.

A fire destroyed nearly 63,000 high school students’ exam papers in the northern region that were being graded. The exam is scheduled to be re-held from June 16 to 21.

In Myanmar, the university entrance exam is considered an important milestone that determines the future academic and career path of high school students.

The earthquake on March 28 killed more than 3,700 people and flattened many buildings in central Myanmar, with Mandalay - the second most populous city - suffering the most damage.

According to the United Nations, more than 60,000 people are currently living in temporary shelters. The United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) estimates that some 2.7 million children are living in severely affected areas.

Analysis from the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) shows that the ground in some places has shifted up to 6m due to the impact of the earthquake.

Myanmar military government extends ceasefire until April 30

On April 22, the Myanmar military government announced that the ceasefire - which expires at midnight tonight - will be extended until April 30, to facilitate continued reconstruction and recovery after the earthquake.

The decision came after several organizations in the country called for an extension of the temporary ceasefire to support relief efforts, which have entered their fourth week.

A temporary ceasefire was declared by Myanmar's military government on April 2, just days after a devastating 7.7-magnitude earthquake killed more than 3,700 people.

Just before that, the Three Brothers Alliance (including the Myanmar National Democratic Alliance Army, the Ta'ang National Liberation Army and the Arakan Army - Myanmar) also declared a unilateral ceasefire with the military government, to support international humanitarian relief operations after the devastating earthquake.
