V-League: Unique B.Binh Duong

Nearly 6 years after leaving B.Binh Duong Club, former striker Nguyen Anh Duc has returned to his old team as head coach since round 22 of V-League 2024 - 2025.

Since Anh Duc left in November 2019, B. Binh Duong has changed coaches 12 times in 6 seasons. Rarely has any team in Vietnam changed coaches so often and so regularly!

It is worth mentioning that most of the coaches are famous and experienced such as Phan Thanh Hung, Dang Tran Chinh, Lu Dinh Tuan, Nguyen Quoc Tuan, Le Huynh Duc, Hoang Anh Tuan... But no coach has been in office for long at the team famous as a "grinder" of coaches.

Even a "hardcore" coach like Le Huynh Duc had to leave after round 23 of V-League 2023 - 2024. At that time, B.Binh Duong Club bought many quality players, set a target of top 3, but eventually fell into the relegation spiral.

In the 2024 - 2025 season, B.Binh Duong Club continues to spend money on buying stars and puts its trust in coach Hoang Anh Tuan to be able to bring the team into the top 3.

But after only 9 matches, the former head coach of the Vietnam U23 team said goodbye due to the team's poor performance. Now, coach Nguyen Anh Duc has been chosen to lead the B.Binh Duong club to find a way to stay in the league in the last 5 rounds of V-League 2024 - 2025.

Once a force in Vietnamese football, B.Binh Duong has won the V-League 4 times. But the last time they won the V-League was in 2015. In the past 10 years, the lack of investment in personnel has been the main reason why B.Binh Duong has not been able to compete for achievements. But even with strong investment in the last two seasons, they still have to worry about relegation. What leads to this paradox?

It is not only a professional matter but also a behind-the-scenes story. Coach Phan Thanh Hung left B.Binh Duong after round 9 of V-League 2021 due to heart disease. But he is still the technical director of SHB Da Nang Club. Professional interference is the main reason why this former head coach of the Vietnam national team chose to leave despite the contract being signed for 3 years.

Among the coaches who lost their jobs in Binh Duong, coach Carlos Oliveira, who has dual Brazilian and American citizenship, was fired after only two months, right before the start of V-League 2020. Frustrated, coach Carlos Oliveira spoke to the press about his professional interference, not knowing which players the team would take and who they would try out.

The power in the locker room is also worth mentioning. Even Anh Duc, when he was still a player, was rumored to be the reason why coach Tran Minh Chien had to resign after only three matches in the 2019 V-League. At that time, Mr. Chien had put Anh Duc on the bench many times. Even Anh Duc, after leaving B.Binh Duong, admitted in the press: "I didn't listen so I had to leave the club."

Now, the person who was refused to renew his contract in 2023 due to his old age is being "called upon" to bring about changes to the team as well as find a way to stay in the league in the last 5 rounds of V-League 2024 - 2025 (B.Binh Duong is temporarily ranked 8th with 25 points after 21 matches).

Leading his hometown team is a big challenge for Anh Duc, because his V-League coaching experience is zero. In the past two years, Anh Duc has only been the head coach of Long An and Binh Phuoc clubs in the First Division. Not to mention, instability in the coaching bench of B.Binh Duong club is a never-ending story. Anh Duc's success with B.Binh Duong club, therefore, is even more of a question mark.
