Nearly 9,000 cases of hand, foot and mouth disease, 3 children died

In a document dated June 5 sent to the People's Committees of provinces and cities on strengthening the prevention and control of hand, foot and mouth disease, the Ministry of Health said that from the beginning of 2023 to now, the country has recorded 8,995 cases of hand, foot and mouth disease, of which there have been 3 deaths.

The number of hand, foot and mouth disease cases has increased rapidly in recent weeks, and cases of Enterovirus (EV71) infection have been recorded.

Symptoms of hand, foot and mouth disease in children

To proactively prevent and control hand, foot and mouth disease, limit cases and deaths, the Ministry of Health requests the People's Committees of provinces and centrally run cities to direct authorities at all levels, sectors, political and socio-political organizations to proactively coordinate with the health sector to synchronously and drastically deploy solutions to prevent hand, foot and mouth disease, especially focusing on areas with high numbers of cases and at risk of outbreaks.

Direct the local health sector to proactively and coordinate with the district-level People's Committees, relevant departments, agencies and sectors to closely monitor and supervise the epidemic situation, promptly detect and promptly handle newly emerging outbreaks... Strengthen mobile anti-epidemic teams to promptly investigate, verify, handle outbreaks and support lower-level areas when necessary.

Treatment routing, patient examination, admission, emergency care, and treatment, paying special attention to severe cases to minimize mortality; effectively preventing cross-infection in medical facilities.

The Ministry of Health requested the People's Committees of provinces and cities to direct the Department of Education and Training to proactively coordinate with the health sector to communicate at schools, especially at nurseries, kindergartens, and preschools about hand, foot and mouth disease; ensure that educational and training facilities have adequate means of washing hands with soap or hand sanitizer regularly, properly, and conveniently.

Direct the Department of Finance to submit to the Provincial and Municipal People's Committees for timely decision on allocating and supplementing funds for the prevention and control of hand, foot and mouth disease to promptly implement disease prevention and control measures and ensure adequate supply of medicines, chemicals, supplies and equipment for disease prevention and control.
