Selling shoes at Dong Ha market (Dong Ha city, Quang Tri province) for many years, but never before has Ms. Nguyen Thi My's stall had so few customers as now.
In the morning, Mrs. My opened the stall, put out the goods, and then put them back in at night, but during the day not many customers came to buy, which made her worried.
“Without customers, the goods will become old and damaged, while we have to pay all taxes and fees, so it is very difficult,” said Ms. Nguyen Thi My.
The same situation happened at the fabric stall of Ms. Pham Thi Le Ha. Ms. Ha said that since the COVID-19 outbreak, the number of customers coming to her stall has gradually decreased, with some days having no customers at all.
Ms. Ha commented that due to the development of online shopping, consumers have more choices and lower prices, so people who rent stalls at the market like her will face even more difficulties.
Research shows that many stalls in Dong Ha market have closed down and returned their stalls. Particularly the stalls selling fabric, 50% have returned their stalls because the more they sell, the more they lose.
In particular, on the 2nd floor of building 3 in this market, the stalls have been returned for a long time, but no businesses or customers are interested in renting them for business.
Ms. Nguyen Thi Thu Thanh - Deputy Head of Dong Ha Market Management Board, Quang Tri province said that there are many reasons why small traders in the market have few customers, the biggest reason being the COVID-19 pandemic which has "broken" sales.
To attract businesses and customers to do business in the stalls not located in the market, Ms. Nguyen Thi Thu Thanh said that if the rental is in accordance with regulations, it will be difficult to attract people because the price is high, but reducing the price is against the regulations.
