When family becomes a powerful "assistant"

The old saying goes, “Men build houses, women build homes.” Nowadays, both husband and wife can work together, earn money, take care of children, and build family happiness. There are many “men” who are willing to become companions with their wives, start businesses together, and support their wives in their successful business and trading.

That is the story of Ms. Thach Thi Chal Thi, a Khmer ethnic, and her husband, Mr. Pham Dinh Ngai, living in Tra Vinh. This place is famous for its vast green coconut trees and delicious, fatty coconuts. Coconut nectar has become an agricultural product that has made the couple's name. It is known that Ms. Thach Thi Chal Thi is a food technology engineer, her husband is an electrical engineering specialist. In 2017 - 2018, she and her husband returned to their hometown of Tra Vinh to give birth to their first child. For the first time in their lives, they saw people buying a whole coconut tree with more than 20 fruits for only 30 thousand VND. That was when they thought about what else to do with the coconut tree.

Thanks to her expertise in food technology, Ms. Chal Thi learned that the profession of collecting nectar from coconut flowers is a traditional profession of the Khmer people but has been lost for a long time. In countries such as Thailand, Indonesia, the Philippines... in addition to harvesting coconuts for their fruits, people also create other valuable products such as coconut nectar. After a period of research and experimentation, she found a way to produce a "line" of nectar from coconut flowers. With the orientation of developing products related to coconut nectar, she and her husband quit their jobs in the city to establish a company together. Her husband - CEO Pham Dinh Ngai has become a companion, a powerful assistant to support and develop the company with Ms. Thi.

Her company was also certified by the People's Committee of Tra Vinh province for its coconut nectar and coconut nectar drinks meeting OCOP standards. In 2021, the Association of High-Quality Vietnamese Goods Enterprises certified the products as high-quality Vietnamese food products - integration standards. Coconut nectar is also one of the four typical national rural industrial products in 2021 of Tra Vinh province announced by the Ministry of Industry and Trade .

That is the startup story of Ms. Hoang Thi Cam Nhung (Thua Thien Hue province). After graduating from the pedagogical department, Ms. Cam Nhung taught at schools for a few years before her contract ended. Not being accepted into the payroll, she worked many different jobs to make ends meet. After getting married and having children, she wanted to start a business with the hope of creating quality, safe cereal products, as well as having a stable source of agricultural products for farmers.

She said that one of the factors that helped the business model succeed was the consensus of the couple. Her husband was always by her side, supporting her on the path to starting a business. From going to rural areas to find raw materials, to establishing a company, importing goods, etc. At first, her husband considered it a part-time job, but later when his wife's company was trusted by customers, seeing Ms. Nhung's hard work, he quit his stable job to support his wife. He took on difficult jobs that required staying up late and waking up early so that his wife could rest.

Her startup model was also visited by the Provincial Women's Union to learn about and provide support and companionship. Her family is an example of a successful startup with the consensus of both husband and wife, because not all women receive support from their husbands when starting a business, and family is a huge barrier for women when starting a business.

In fact, families play an important role in supporting women in starting a business, both mentally and financially. This support helps women feel more confident in making decisions related to work and business. Families create a positive space where women can share their ideas and concerns without fear of criticism or opposition. Support from families helps women feel more confident in pursuing their passions and goals. In particular, when starting a business, women may have difficulty balancing work and family. Family support with housework and childcare helps women have more time and energy to focus on their business.

Supporting women's access to technology

Recently, social networking platforms and e-commerce sites have been helping start-up projects to trade smoothly and bring products closer to consumers. However, women entrepreneurs face many difficulties when they have not yet adapted to the digital environment. Many people have helped their wives access social networks and apply high technology.

For example, the story of a couple selling sticky rice in Hanoi is quite famous on social media platforms. The husband named D and his wife named T are from the 9x generation. Mr. D was originally a barber. After his wife gave birth, the family's income was more expensive, so Ms. T decided to learn how to make sticky rice in Phu Thuong. Initially, the sticky rice stall only served people in the surrounding area, but, with a hobby of watching funny videos, Mr. D learned from the experiences of content creators on the Internet. He started filming videos about his wife's sticky rice stall with funny, humorous stories. Over time, his wife's small sticky rice stall became famous, attracting customers from many places to eat, and the small sticky rice stall's income gradually improved.

That is the story of Giang A De and Vang Thi Ly in Mu Cang Chai district, Yen Bai province. Initially, Vang Thi Ly and her husband were working in different jobs to make ends meet. But in 2017, when they saw the tourism potential in their hometown, Vang Thi Ly and Giang A De decided to quit their jobs and start building a homestay. At that time, difficulties piled up, the young couple had no money, no experience in service, management, and limited English. Vang Thi Ly was determined to work as a waitress at a hotel specializing in receiving foreign guests to gain experience and learn more English. Giang A De stayed behind to complete the homestay, explore the initial business and improve his foreign language skills.

After a period of working as a waitress, Ms. Vang Thi Ly learned from the experiences of famous hotels and homestays to put into operation her family's business model. Mr. Giang A De, with his experience in telecommunications and proficiency in using the Internet, created a website to promote the couple's homestay. The couple's homestay gradually attracted foreign guests to experience and left many good impressions.

By around 2023, the couple’s group had more than 50 motorbike taxi drivers, 17 tour guides, 7 English guides, and 14 households specializing in poster teams and mountain climbing guides. Despite their busy work, since the facility began operating, Vang Thi Ly and her husband have still organized free English classes for young people in the commune.

The 4.0 industrial revolution is posing challenges for women, especially in accessing and applying new technology. To balance work and family life, more and more women are participating in the startup and innovation ecosystem, many of whom are successful thanks to knowing how to take advantage of the strengths of technology to create competitive products and services in the market.

Digital transformation not only brings opportunities for women to access new business models, new markets, new job opportunities, but also creates conditions for women to participate in commercial trading platforms, approach customers, and manage business activities more effectively.

The role of relatives, especially men in the family, in supporting women in accessing technology to start a business does not stop at helping to create a positive mental environment, sharing responsibilities and accompanying their wives on the journey of business development. Nowadays, many husbands have used their technological strengths such as creating websites, social networking sites, e-commerce accounts, etc. to support women in the family to do business and start a business smoothly.
