Big family brings 15kg of crabs and 100 eggs to Sam Son

For the past 4 years, every summer, the extended family of Ms. Do Thanh Huyen (living in Kham Thien market alley, Hanoi ) has organized a long vacation together.

The first year, the extended family went to Phu Quoc. But in the last 3 years, they have chosen Sam Son ( Thanh Hoa province) as a familiar destination because it is convenient to travel to and suitable for many generations of the family.

"The extended family consists of many small families with generations from elderly grandparents over 70 to 2-3 year old children, so finding a suitable location is everyone's top priority," said Ms. Huyen.

This year, the total number of participants on the trip was 23, including the husband’s parents, Huyen and her husband, and the families of the husband’s parents’ siblings. Due to the large number of members, the preparation of food to bring along needed to be carefully calculated.

Going to the market to choose fresh ingredients is the responsibility of Ms. Huyen's mother and her husband's aunts and uncles. Seafood is an indispensable dish, including about 15kg of crab bought from Quang Ninh, fresh oysters, shrimp, snails...

In addition, they also brought 100 chicken eggs and duck eggs carefully packed in foam boxes, 2kg of rice rolls, pre-processed fresh vegetables, spices...

The Hanoi girl said that before every big trip, the food is the most carefully prepared and is also a way to bond the family members. Each person is assigned a task and is excited to participate.

According to her, bringing fresh food from home is not because she is afraid of being ripped off at tourist areas.

"My husband's house is near the market, so it's very convenient to buy things. Moreover, each family has different economic conditions, so having fresh, clean food available to prepare helps the elderly feel secure and comfortable," Ms. Huyen explained.

The storm came suddenly, the whole family traveled to the beach in the villa

About a month before the trip, the family rented a villa with 7 rooms, enough space for all members. This is the second year the family has rented this villa with full services such as cooking, cleaning, and a private swimming pool. The price is about 7-8 million VND/night on weekends and 5.5 million VND/night on weekdays.

This year’s trip took place from July 20 to July 23, right when Typhoon Wipha (Typhoon No. 3) affected the coastal area. On the first day, the whole family still managed to go to the beach to enjoy some space at sea.

But the following days, due to heavy rain, they spent most of their time in the villa cooking, singing karaoke and chatting all day. Going out on a stormy day, Ms. Huyen felt even luckier because she had prepared food in advance. Thanks to that, the members had delicious meals and did not have to move out too much.

For breakfast, the kitchen area is bustling with dishes that change daily, sometimes with rice rolls and sausage, other days with vermicelli with water spinach, instant noodles with poached eggs. Lunch and dinner are constantly changing with seafood such as steamed crab, grilled oysters with scallion oil, grilled shrimp with cheese.

On the last day before leaving the villa, they gathered together to cook a home-cooked meal of pickled sour plums, a typical summer meal of Hanoians. To give the family more time to rest, the family hired a cleaning service, hired someone to cook the first meal, and hired a dishwashing service.

Although they cannot go out much due to the storm, the members have almost no free time. They participate in many activities together such as playing pickleball, swimming, and singing karaoke. Cooking time also helps strengthen the bonds of small families.

“Each person contributes a hand, no one feels tired”

Ms. Huyen said that organizing such a large trip required the cooperation of the whole family. Each person was assigned a small task so no one felt tired.

Although the cost has not been specifically calculated, the family applies a flexible way of contributing money. Families with conditions contribute a little more, the rest is divided among people so that everyone feels comfortable and happy.

After sharing the story on her personal page, Ms. Huyen was surprised because her family's experience received great attention from the online community with many mixed opinions.

Some people think that this is an overly frugal way of traveling, and that bringing too many things will spoil the fun. However, the Hanoi visitor affirmed that the most important thing is the family bond over the years and no one complains about the hardship.

"Every year, the seniors are the ones who make the plans and the children just pack their bags and go. Next year, we will definitely have the same trip. Being a daughter-in-law in a big family where all members are happy, close-knit, and eagerly waiting for the summer vacation makes me very happy," Huyen said with a smile.
