Pig price on February 16, 2025: Stable across the country

Northern pig price

The latest survey results show that the price of live pigs in the Northern region has decreased to 72,000 VND/kg when Bac Giang and Phu Tho simultaneously decreased by 1,000 VND/kg in the morning trading session on February 18.

At present, the purchase price of live pigs in localities in the region does not have much difference, ranging from 70,000 - 71,000 VND/kg.

Pig price in Central Highlands

The pig market in the Central Highlands region did not record any changes this morning.

Lam Dong and Binh Thuan continue to maintain the highest price in the region at 72,000 VND/kg. Meanwhile, Quang Tri, Quang Nam, Binh Dinh and Khanh Hoa have the lowest purchase price at 69,000 VND/kg. The remaining provinces maintain transactions in the range of 70,000 - 71,000 VND/kg.

Southern pig price

In the South, the price of live pigs continued to increase in Binh Duong and Tay Ninh, reaching 73,000 VND/kg. This price was also recorded in Dong Nai, Dong Thap, Ba Ria - Vung Tau , Can Tho, Soc Trang and Ca Mau, the highest in the country.

Meanwhile, in other localities in the region, traders are purchasing live pigs at prices ranging from 70,000 - 72,000 VND/kg.

At some traditional markets, retail pork prices range from 140,000 to 240,000 VND/kg. Types such as rib-less pork belly, lean pork belly and spare ribs all cost over 200,000 VND/kg, while some high-end products from major brands cost up to 260,000 VND/kg.

Ms. Hong, a trader at Tan Dinh Market, said the amount of meat imported to her stall has decreased by 20% due to weak purchasing power. "The wholesale price has been increasing continuously, forcing me to adjust the retail price accordingly, but it is still difficult to sell because customers are wary," she said. To save costs, she goes to the wholesale market to get the goods herself instead of buying through an intermediary, but her profits are still not good due to the decrease in consumption.

At Ba Chieu market (Binh Thanh district), business is also facing many difficulties. Traders said that pork is currently priced at 100,000 VND/kg, but after cutting and adding other costs, each kg sold only brings a profit of about 5,000 - 10,000 VND.

According to traders, the main reason for the sharp increase in pork prices is the decrease in supply at wholesale markets. The price of live pigs has now exceeded 70,000 VND/kg, pushing the price of butchered pork up by about 20% compared to the same period last year. Hoc Mon wholesale market recorded 4,143 pigs brought in on February 17, an increase of 600 pigs compared to the previous week but still 2,000 pigs lower than the period before Tet. CP's grade 1 live pig price is currently at 71,000 VND/kg, while the purchase price of live pigs from households ranges from 65,000 - 75,000 VND/kg.

The increase in pork prices has led to price adjustments for many food items. Ms. Huyen, the owner of a broken rice restaurant in Go Vap District, was forced to increase the price of each serving by VND5,000 to VND35,000, while reducing the size of the ribs and adding fried chicken to keep customers. Meanwhile, a pork leg noodle restaurant on Dien Bien Phu Street (District 3) has just adjusted its price to VND45,000 per bowl. "The restaurant uses fresh meat, so the price increase forces us to adjust, otherwise we will lose money," said Mr. Thanh, the restaurant owner.

According to Mr. Nguyen Kim Doan, Vice President of Dong Nai Livestock Association, the price of live pigs is likely to continue to increase due to recovering demand but unstable supply. Many farmers are still hesitant to restock due to fear of disease, while the price of piglets is still high. Large enterprises are also facing difficulties due to the impact of African swine fever, causing a decrease in output.

"Pork prices will continue to rise as schools and processing zones resume operations, but it will be difficult to surpass the peak of 2020," he said.

According to the assessment of the professional agency of Dinh Hoa district (Thai Nguyen), since implementing the linkage model and expanding the scale of livestock farming, households in the area have increased the application of scientific and technical advances, bringing higher economic efficiency, according to Thai Nguyen Newspaper.

In the field of disease prevention, people used to buy medicine only when their animals got sick. However, when participating in the joint livestock farming model, vaccination is fully implemented, and food is also adjusted to suit each stage of the animal's development.

In addition, thanks to strict management and supervision from breeding, food sources to vaccination, livestock have good growth conditions, creating high quality products to meet market demand.

Mr. Ly Van Thang, Vice Chairman of Dinh Hoa District People's Committee, said that there are currently nearly 30 livestock and poultry farms in the area. In addition to encouraging people to participate in the joint livestock farming model and providing support according to regulations, the district government is also focusing on attracting businesses to invest in this field.
