Thai jackfruit price in the first half of May 2025: Market is quiet...

The price of Thai jackfruit in the Western provinces continued to decline sharply in the first half of May 2025, causing concern among both growers and traders. Compared to the beginning of the year, the current price of jackfruit has decreased by more than 60%, reaching the lowest level in the past 6 months.

According to records at gardens in Ben Tre and Tien Giang – the two largest jackfruit growing areas in the country – Thai jackfruit grade 1 (8-12 kg/fruit, green skin, evenly opened eyes) is currently purchased for only about 10,000 VND/kg. Meanwhile, smaller jackfruits with uneven appearance (grade 2 and grade 3) only cost between 4,000 and 6,000 VND/kg, and in many places, traders even refuse to buy poor quality products or fruits that do not meet the standard weight.

A similar situation occurred in Dong Thap , Hau Giang and Vinh Long provinces, where the price of jackfruit at the garden fell to only half of the investment cost. Many gardeners said that at this price, each ton of jackfruit sold would result in a loss of millions of dong, not to mention the cost of care, fertilizer and labor.

The main reason for the plunge in Thai jackfruit prices is believed to be the abundant supply and slowing consumption. Traders say that the number of export orders to China has dropped sharply, while the domestic market is not able to absorb the demand. Favorable weather in March and April caused a surge in production, leading to a clear oversupply situation.

In that context, many fruit orchards in the Western provinces have temporarily stopped purchasing Thai jackfruit or only accept limited quantities. Many farmers are forced to let the ripe jackfruit fall in the garden because selling it does not cover the transportation costs.

It is forecasted that in the coming time, if the output is not improved, the price of Thai jackfruit may continue to decrease. Some localities such as Hau Giang and Dong Nai are calling on businesses to invest in deep processing to solve the output and increase the value of agricultural products, avoiding dependence on fresh exports - which are showing many instabilities.
