Summer-autumn irrigation water: Worry about the end of the canal, high pressure

(Baohatinh.vn) - The irrigation system in Ha Tinh basically provides enough water for 45,170 hectares of summer-autumn rice, however, some highland areas and the end of the canal are at risk of local drought if the heat continues.

Nearly 200 hectares of rice are at risk of local drought.

Nam Ha Tinh Irrigation Company Limited is managing and operating 38 reservoirs, 5 dams, 1 surface sluice to keep fresh water for irrigation of more than 19,800 hectares of summer-autumn rice. According to records, the water level of large lakes is quite abundant, such as: Ke Go reservoir (Cam Xuyen) reaching 28.68/32.5m (70% capacity), Song Rac reservoir reaching 21.18/23.2m (76% capacity), Thuong Tuy lake reaching 22.85/24.5m (81% capacity), ...

However, if the weather continues to be hot and dry with little rain from May to August, some small dams in Huong Khe district such as Mung dam (Dien My), Trang dam (Huong Thuy), Khe Con dam (Huong Giang) ... are at risk of falling into a state of drought and local water shortage.

Ke Go reservoir (Cam Xuyen district) is currently at elevation 28.68/32.5m (reaching 70% of design capacity).

Mr. Tran Nguyen Hong - Head of Da Han Station (Nam Ha Tinh Irrigation Company Limited) said: "The station supplies water for irrigation for more than 470 hectares of summer-autumn rice, of which some areas in Huong Giang and Huong Thuy communes... often lack water during the hot season. The worrying thing is that the amount of water evaporates quickly, so irrigation periods must last 7-8 days while normally it only lasts 3-4 days".

In addition to the factor of prolonged drought, through surveys, some dams in Huong Khe district have been degraded, eroded, leaked, limiting the process of storing water. Moreover, with the large and quite complex terrain, running through many steep hills, often being deposited by rocks and soil, some canals have been damaged, affecting the process of water circulation for summer-autumn crop production.

In hot weather conditions with little rain from May to August, some small dams in the province will fall into drought and local water shortages.

In districts such as Cam Xuyen, Thach Ha, Ha Tinh city, ... some highland areas and the end of the canal are also forecasted to be at risk of water shortage. Due to its location at the end of the N19 canal system, Dong Mon ward (Ha Tinh city) only put into production the summer-autumn crop on nearly 100 hectares of rice land, accounting for about 1/3 of the total cultivated area of the ward.

Mr. Duong Cao Son - Vice Chairman of Dong Mon Ward People's Committee (Ha Tinh City) said: "Due to difficulties in irrigation water sources, a part of the area has to be converted to dryland crops or left fallow during the summer-autumn crop. Moreover, in nearly 100 hectares of land put into production, if the drought continues, ensuring water for rice growth will also be a big challenge."

According to the Department of Agriculture and Environment, irrigation water sources are basically sufficient to irrigate more than 45,170 hectares of summer-autumn rice in 2025. However, in the event of unfavorable weather conditions and low rainfall (only 75% of the average rainfall for many years) during the peak summer months, it is expected that nearly 200 hectares of rice production land will face water shortages.

In addition, if the water level on Ngan Pho and La rivers drops, saline intrusion will occur, and the water supply process in some irrigation areas on Ngan Pho and La rivers (Son Ninh, Lam Hong, Nghi Xuan 1 pumping stations...) will be interrupted.

Localities regularly pay attention to mobilizing resources to solidify the system of intra-field canals and irrigation canals to serve rice production.

Proactive solutions against drought

Based on the actual situation and forecasts of the professional sector, irrigation companies and localities have developed drought prevention plans for each construction system; proactively implemented and operated water-saving effectively.

Mr. Ho Duc Viet - Head of Exploitation Management Department (Nam Ha Tinh Irrigation Company Limited) said: “The company organizes dredging canals, maintaining and repairing works, clearing the flow; propagating to local authorities to urge people to join in irrigation work. At the same time, open water in time to serve production, prioritize irrigation in remote and high areas first, organize water pressure to communes at the end of the canal. Make a plan to fight drought, install additional field pumps, and make plans to transfer water to create sources in other works when necessary”.

Nam Ha Tinh Irrigation Company Limited launched dredging canals, maintaining and repairing works, and clearing the flow.

At this time, Bac Ha Tinh Irrigation Company Limited is preparing to open water for summer-autumn rice cultivation after completing the spring rice harvest; proactively implementing specific drought prevention solutions for each irrigation area. In particular, for the irrigation area of the Nghen River basin, the company will focus on regulating water resources on the main canal of Ngan Truoi - Linh Cam at a reasonable elevation to support irrigation for some areas in Can Loc district.

In case of severe drought and high salinity intrusion, Trung Luong sluice gates (Hong Linh town) and Duc Xa sluice gates (Duc Tho) must be closed, the company regulates water from Ngan Truoi lake into Linh Cam main canal and discharges water through deep discharge gates at K8+100, K12+650, K19+340, K24+851, K33, pouring down drainage axes such as: drainage axis 21, Cho Giay canal, 19/5 canal, Cho Vi canal,... into the river system to create a source for drought-fighting pumping stations.

Localities need to coordinate in receiving water and regulating internal water suitable for summer-autumn crop preparation after the end of the spring harvest.

Mr. Tran Duc Thinh - Head of the Irrigation Sub-Department (Department of Agriculture and Environment) said: “The specialized sector has advised the Provincial People's Committee to issue a telegram to thoroughly inform localities, related departments, sectors, and irrigation management companies to focus on implementing drought-fighting solutions. Accordingly, it is necessary to focus on reviewing and balancing actual water resources to develop appropriate irrigation plans; implementing crop conversion in areas with difficulty in irrigation water; planning to install field pumping stations to fight drought. Localities coordinate with irrigation companies to receive water, regulate water in the fields appropriately, and avoid loss and waste of water resources. At the same time, continue to focus and mobilize resources to solidify intra-field canals...”.
