A Xa Doai orange is grown by gardeners in Nghi Dien commune, Nghi Loc district, province. Nghe An sells oranges on the Tet market for about 80,000 VND; sometimes even up to 100,000 VND. Despite the high price, Xa Doai oranges are always in high demand, sometimes not enough to sell. At this time, gardeners are taking care of and cherishing each fruit, because compared to rice, a Xa Doai orange is as expensive as a hundred kilos of rice.
With nearly 50 orange trees from 5 to 9 years old, each year, Mr. Nguyen Van Hanh's family (Quyet Thang hamlet, Nghi Dien commune) earns about 200 million VND. Mr. Hanh said that this year, the weather is more favorable than last year, so the fruit set rate is higher. This year's Tet holiday, his family will have about 3,000 oranges to supply to the market.
“It is called a market, but the buyers are mainly those who have been buying oranges for a long time to eat or as gifts. Most of the oranges have been ordered by customers, waiting to come and cut them after the full moon of the twelfth lunar month,” said Mr. Hanh.
Xa Doai oranges have been around for hundreds of years, were once offered to the king and were considered the highest quality. The oranges have a sweet taste and a unique aroma that cannot be found anywhere else. The orange flesh is golden yellow, the peel is smooth and thin, different from other types of oranges.
Next to Mr. Hanh's orange garden, Mr. Nguyen Van Phuc's 80-tree orange garden this year also has more fruit than last year.
In Nghi Dien commune, Xa Doai Orange Restoration and Development Center (Lac Hong hamlet) has the largest orange area, about 4 hectares. This is an orange garden that is cared for organically, achieving the 4-star OCOP product of Nghe An province.
According to Mr. Le Van Thang, manager of the Xa Doai Orange Restoration and Development Center, with 4,000 trees, the farm expects to harvest more than 20 tons of fruit.
"A Xa Doai orange costs as much as 2kg of Vinh orange. Compared to rice, one orange is as expensive as one hundred kilograms of rice. This is a crop that brings high economic value, but is difficult to grow and only when grown in this land, with suitable soil and water quality, can the oranges ensure deliciousness," Mr. Thang shared.
In Nghi Dien commune, Nghi Loc district, there are currently more than 30 hectares of land growing Xa Doai oranges; of which about 13 hectares are grown by households.
Only about a month to go Lunar New Year At Ty 2025. With high economic value, the garden owners here are taking care of and cherishing each orange to provide to customers on time.
The garden owners here said that there are oranges that cost up to 100,000 VND. They must be medium-sized, tall, smooth, shiny skin, without any defects. Usually, there are not many “selected goods” like this, of course, customers also choose very carefully…
