Domestic coffee prices turn down sharply

Recorded at 5:00 a.m. on April 5, 2025, the coffee market in the Central Highlands region suddenly dropped sharply compared to the previous trading session, a decrease of 2,300 - 2,500 VND/kg, currently the average purchase price reached 131,100 VND/kg.

According to the latest update, coffee prices in Dak Lak are at 131,000 VND/kg, while Lam Dong is currently purchasing at 130,200 VND/kg; Gia Lai and Dak Nong are recorded at 131,000 VND/kg and 131,200 VND/kg, respectively.

The US has recently imposed a reciprocal tax of up to 46% on coffee imported from Vietnam, the world’s second largest coffee producer. Meanwhile, Indonesia, the fourth largest, is also subject to a tax of 32%, while Brazil and Colombia are only subject to a tax of 10%.

Vietnam is currently the third largest coffee exporter to the United States, the world’s largest consumer. Vietnam’s exports consist mainly of robusta coffee, which is used to make instant coffee and bottled beverages.

“Vietnam will be the most affected by the new tariffs,” said Tomas Araujo, an expert at brokerage firm StoneX. He warned that the supply chain and consumers in the US will face difficulties due to increased costs.

A European trader estimated that the 46% tariff would increase the cost of each ton of coffee imported from Vietnam by about $2,500. Meanwhile, as of April 3, the price of robusta coffee futures on the ICE exchange was $5,390/ton.

The current problem is that it is unclear whether the new tax rate will apply to shipments already in transit to the US, which is creating confusion among the export business community.

“The coffee industry and the confectionery industry in the US will certainly lobby to have coffee excluded from the tariff list,” said Judith Ganes, president of J Ganes Consulting. She also doubts the new tariff policy will last.

In the short term, U.S. roasters may shift their Robusta imports to Brazil. However, the country mainly produces Arabica, so the supply of Robusta is limited.

Conversely, when coffee exports from Vietnam to the US are restricted, markets such as Europe and China will have the opportunity to access cheaper robusta from Vietnam.

According to IPC's listing, Lampung black pepper price (Indonesia) is currently at 7,239 USD/ton, while Muntok white pepper price is being traded at 10,066 USD/ton.

The Malaysian market remained stable with ASTA black pepper prices reaching USD 9,850/ton and ASTA white pepper at USD 12,300/ton.

In Brazil, after a previous slight decrease, pepper prices remained stable with the current purchase price at 6,950 USD/ton.

Vietnam's pepper exports continued to be stable and maintained at a high level, with the export price of 500 g/l black pepper at 7,100 USD/ton, 550 g/l at 7,300 USD/ton and white pepper at 10,100 USD/ton.

In the first two months of 2025, Vietnam focused on exporting unground black pepper, according to data from the General Department of Customs, this product accounted for nearly 59% of the total volume and more than 56% of the total export value. Export volume reached nearly 16 thousand tons, equivalent to about 103.9 million USD. Although output decreased by more than 24% compared to the same period, export value increased by nearly 49%.

In contrast to unground black pepper, ground white pepper recorded a 17% decline in output. Meanwhile, ground black pepper and white pepper showed a strong upward trend, increasing by 10.2% and 61.2% respectively over the same period in 2024.

The total export value of pepper in this period continued to grow strongly thanks to the increase in selling prices, in which black pepper contributed the largest increase in value, with a rate exceeding 113% compared to the previous year.

Mr. Phan Minh Thong - Chairman of the Board of Directors of Phuc Sinh Company - shared: "The US partner has just sent the 5th revised tariff update in 2025. In which, coffee and pepper exported from Vietnam to the US continue to be exempted from tax."

According to Mr. Thong: “All coffee products, including roasted, unroasted or decaffeinated, as well as coffee-containing substitutes, are subject to a ‘free’ tax rate. For pepper, the tax exemption policy is also maintained, which continues to bring a great competitive advantage for Vietnamese exports to the US market.”
