While the prices of many green vegetables in Ho Chi Minh City have decreased by about 20% after the storms, the price of fresh chili peppers has surged due to a sharp drop in supply, with some retailers selling them for up to 160,000 VND/kg.

The agricultural market in Ho Chi Minh City is experiencing contrasting price trends. While most green vegetables have cooled down after the price surge caused by storms, the price of fresh chili peppers has skyrocketed to a record high, putting pressure on consumer spending.

The price of fresh chili peppers has surged to an unprecedented high.

According to reports, the wholesale price of premium chili peppers at Thu Duc agricultural wholesale market has been traded at 125,000 – 130,000 VND/kg, a price considered very high in many years. When sold at local markets, the retail price is even higher, reaching 150,000 – 160,000 VND/kg.

Vegetable prices in Ho Chi Minh City are trending downwards, while fresh chili prices are rising sharply due to scarce supply.
Vegetable prices in Ho Chi Minh City have cooled down after a period of sharp increases, while fresh chili peppers have surged.

The main reason is the sharp drop in supply.

The cause of this price increase has been identified as prolonged heavy rain in key chili-growing areas, which severely damaged chili crops due to root rot and pests, leading to a sharp decrease in harvest yields. Traders report that the amount of chili reaching the market is currently only about 30-40% of the usual amount, while market demand has not decreased correspondingly.

The amount of fresh chili peppers arriving at wholesale markets has dropped sharply, to only about 30-40% of normal levels.
The amount of chili peppers arriving at the market is currently only about 30-40% of what it usually is, while consumer demand has not decreased correspondingly.

The high prices have directly impacted consumers. Many people have reported having to reduce the amount of chili in their meals or switch to alternatives such as dried chili peppers to save money.

Leafy greens cool down after a period of rising prices.

In contrast to chili peppers, the prices of other green vegetables have stabilized and decreased significantly. Supply from Lam Dong and other provinces in the Mekong Delta has recovered, helping to reduce prices at wholesale markets by an average of about 20% compared to the peak period.

  • Mustard greens and sweet cabbage: Prices have dropped from 40,000-42,000 VND/kg to around 32,000 VND/kg.
  • Scallions: Prices have dropped sharply from 90,000 VND/kg to around 60,000 VND/kg.
  • Winter melon: Prices have dropped to around 20,000 VND/kg.

According to small traders, although current prices are still higher than before the price increase, this cooling down has helped ease pressure on consumers and retailers. Transactions at markets have become smoother as supply has stabilized again.

Market forecast

Small traders predict that the price of fresh chili peppers may continue to fluctuate sharply in the short term, depending on the ability of production to recover in growing regions after the recent storms. Meanwhile, the prices of other green vegetables are expected to remain stable if the supply continues to be as strong as it is now.
