Recently, due to the impact of unusual storms and heavy rains, the supply of vegetables in Dong Thap province has decreased sharply, leading to a surge in prices for many items. In particular, the price of commercial chili peppers has risen to a record high, bringing significant profits to chili farmers.
Farmers in Dong Thap province are currently harvesting their last chili crop of the year. Depending on the location and time, the price of chili peppers fluctuates from 100,000 to 120,000 VND/kg; Grade A chili peppers have sometimes reached 140,000 VND/kg. At this price, each kilogram of chili peppers yields a profit of approximately 80,000 VND. According to farmers in Go Cong region, this is the highest price in the past 5 years.
The family of Ms. Duong Thi Kim Nga (Kinh Tren hamlet, Tan Dien commune) planted more than 2 acres of Sen Hong chili peppers. After 7-8 harvests, her family earns about 10 million VND per day. “Sometimes we sold them for 120,000 VND/kg, and in recent days it's been around 100,000 VND/kg. It's been so many years since we've had such a good chili harvest,” Ms. Nga shared.

The high price of chili peppers has delighted farmers, with traders coming directly to the fields to buy them. With the harvest season ending and the New Year approaching, market demand is increasing, so chili prices are expected to remain high.
According to businesses, chili prices have increased across the board due to the impact of floods and unusual storms, which have reduced planted area and yield. In Dong Thap, chili cultivation is mainly concentrated in the former Tien Giang province. In flood-affected areas, farmers are beginning to plant their winter-spring chili crop. Despite the sharp increase in commercial chili prices, seed prices remain stable, and supply is assured.
Mr. Cao Dinh Manh, from Vietnam Agricultural Seed Company Limited in Dong Thap, said that unfavorable weather and numerous pests and diseases have caused chili yields to decrease, driving prices up. Meanwhile, seed prices remain stable and supply is abundant.
Dong Thap is the province with the largest area of commercial chili cultivation in the Mekong Delta, with over 4,000 hectares annually. Currently, chili prices remain high, providing farmers with a relatively stable income and creating momentum for the upcoming winter-spring production season with high expectations.
