The kumquat market this year is expected to have many fluctuations, especially in terms of prices. In kumquat gardens in Tu Lien ward (Tay Ho, Hanoi ), most of the customers are wholesale kumquat buyers. Low prices also fluctuate from 500-600 thousand VND/tree. Bonsai kumquats are priced at 25-30 million VND.
According to VietNamNet reporters, kumquat growing villages in Tu Lien ward are starting to have many wholesalers coming to consult wholesale prices and buy in large quantities.
Mr. Hung (a trader in Tu Son, Bac Ninh ) said that every year he goes to consult wholesale prices at the gardens early to grasp the market price.
This year, after walking around the kumquat growing village in Tu Lien ward, he noted that this year's price level is 20% higher than last year for common trees.
“My family expects the wholesale price to range from 300,000 to 400,000 VND/tree to buy about 150 trees to sell for profit. We live far away so transporting the kumquats is also expensive,” Mr. Hung said.
Mr. Hoang, a trader from Bac Tu Liem (Hanoi), said that last year, the price of kumquat trees on the market mainly fluctuated from about 300,000 - 1 million VND/tree for common types. Large, beautiful kumquat trees and Bonsai trees will cost from 2-10 million VND/tree.
"But this year, after the recent storm, nearly half of the kumquat market was severely affected. Prices will certainly increase compared to last year," said Mr. Hoang.
Mr. Ha, a kumquat garden owner in Tu Lien, said that this year's price is expected to increase by 15-20% compared to last year, because damage after the storm will reduce the number of trees and increase care costs.
“My garden is taking care of nearly 400 common kumquat trees. After the recent storm, luckily it was not affected much, so the price of kumquat trees in my garden will not increase much. But the price of 300,000-400,000 is almost non-existent. The wholesale price I am selling is 550,000-650,000 VND/tree. Since the beginning of the month, I have sold 200 trees. Customers mainly come from far away, many from neighboring provinces,” Mr. Ha said.
The owner of Huong Ha garden said that at the moment, it is mainly traders and wholesalers who come to buy kumquat trees. There are a few individual customers who mainly come to deposit and only come to receive the trees close to Tet.
However, most of the kumquat trees in this garden have been sold out. There are only about 100 trees left. The garden owner offers a wholesale price of 700,000-800,000 VND/tree, not including shipping costs.
“If the trees are transported to areas like My Dinh, the price can be up to 1 million VND/tree. Bonsai kumquat trees can cost up to 25-30 million VND/tree. However, few gardens dare to sell Bonsai because of the high risk and strict care requirements in complex weather conditions,” said Ms. Huong.
According to garden owners, at the beginning of the 12th lunar month, more customers come to the garden to buy, and at that time, prices are even higher than at this time.
Meanwhile, some gardens located near the river were heavily affected by the recent storm, so many gardens were left empty, even though Tet is just over a month away.
Mr. Quang, a local resident, recently said that many garden owners suffered heavy losses, even losing hundreds of millions of dong, and had to leave their gardens empty. Meanwhile, some people have switched to growing flowers.
“When switching to flower growing, they will not be under too much pressure due to the capital invested. At the time before Tet, changing their business direction like this will help them recover some of the lost capital,” Mr. Quang said.
