Durian exports drop sharply

In contrast to the "explosive" durian export results in 2024, in the first two months of 2025, Vietnam's durian exports only reached nearly 52.7 million USD, down 69% compared to the same period last year. Notably, the turnover from the largest market, China, decreased by 83%, to only 27 million USD.

According to statistics from the Chinese customs agency, in the first two months of the year, the country spent more than 120 million USD to import 22,980 tons of whole durian, down 56.8% in volume and 57.8% in value compared to the same period in 2024.

Of these, the four main durian suppliers to the Chinese market include: Thailand, Vietnam, Malaysia and the Philippines.

Vietnam’s durian market share in China has dropped sharply to 37%, compared to 61.7% in the same period last year. Meanwhile, Thailand’s has increased to 62.3%, compared to 36.9% in the same period last year, surpassing Vietnam to regain the top spot. Malaysia is in third place with 0.6% and the Philippines is in fourth place with 0.2%.

After two years of "jubilant" durian exports to China, Vietnam suddenly faced an unprecedented challenge when in the first months of 2025, the largest market - China - suddenly tightened food safety inspection regulations, requiring all imported shipments to have a certificate of not containing yellow O (Auramine O) and cadmium.

The decision was made after Chinese authorities discovered yellow O residue in some batches of durian imported from Thailand in late 2024.

Yellow O is an industrial dye banned from use in food due to its potential to cause cancer.

In response to this concern, the General Administration of Customs of China immediately implemented stricter inspection measures, requiring all fruit shipments exported to this country to have active ingredient analysis results from testing laboratories recognized by China.

As a result, hundreds of containers of Vietnamese durian were stuck at the border gate, causing serious losses for businesses and farmers. To resolve the difficulties, the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development directed the Plant Protection Department to urgently negotiate with the Chinese side to recognize domestic testing laboratories.
