On August 6, the price of durian purchased in bulk in key domestic growing areas continued to remain low, marking the lowest level since the beginning of the season. Meanwhile, durian exports to China are facing difficulties due to the country’s increased quality control, causing a sharp decline in export turnover.

Domestic durian price

According to records, the domestic durian market on August 6 did not have many fluctuations compared to the beginning of the week, but the bulk purchase price is at its lowest level since the beginning of the harvest season. In the Western, Southeast and Central Highlands regions, the price of RI6 and Thai durian varieties, which are commonly purchased in bulk, only fluctuates between 20,000 and 45,000 VND/kg.

Specifically, RI6 durian purchased in bulk in the Western and Southeastern provinces is currently at 20,000 - 26,000 VND/kg, while in the Central Highlands it fluctuates around 22,000 - 24,000 VND/kg. The price of Thai durian purchased in bulk is higher, at 36,000 - 45,000 VND/kg depending on the locality and quality of the shipment.

Despite the general price decrease, selected durians remain stable. The beautiful RI6 product is purchased at around 38,000 - 44,000 VND/kg, while the beautiful Thai durian - which is favored by the Chinese market - reaches the highest price of 74,000 - 85,000 VND/kg in the Central Highlands and the Southeast.

Traders said the main reason for the sharp drop in bucket prices was the uneven quality of inputs, coupled with high inventories at purchasing points, while the export rate to foreign markets was slowing down significantly.

Durian export price

Pressure is mounting on Vietnam’s durian industry as China, its largest export partner, tightens import regulations. Chinese authorities have stepped up testing for potentially harmful residues in durian imported from Vietnam, particularly cadmium and heavy metal compounds, according to a report from the South China Morning Post.

From the beginning of 2025, all durian shipments to China must be accompanied by a certificate of conformity. If just one fruit in a batch fails to meet the requirements, the entire batch may be refused entry or forced to be destroyed. Violators also risk having their exports suspended for a long period of time, disrupting the supply chain.

The strict control has extended customs clearance and distribution times, increased logistics costs and affected product freshness. Statistics for the first 6 months of 2025 show that Vietnam's fresh durian export turnover only reached about 611.5 million USD, down 45% compared to the same period last year.

In addition to technical barriers, Vietnam also faces increasingly fierce competition from regional countries such as Thailand, Malaysia, Cambodia and the Philippines. Thailand currently holds a dominant position in the Chinese market thanks to its high-quality products, stable supply and extensive distribution network.

According to expert Lim Chin Khee – consultant of the Malaysian Durian Academy – China is increasingly prioritizing high-end durian products for the gift or special consumption segment. In large supermarkets, a beautiful durian weighing 6kg can be sold for up to 200 yuan (nearly 700,000 VND).

To regain market share, the Vietnamese durian industry needs to quickly improve its quality control capacity, while promoting improvements in preservation, packaging and transportation. In the context of the huge demand in the Chinese market, expanding the planting area and standardizing the production process are the keys to maintaining sustainable growth in the coming time.
