Steel price today 1/5: Continue to go down

Steel prices today, May 1, 2025, recorded a stable domestic market, fluctuating between 13,380 - 14,200 VND/kg; The international steel market recorded a level of 3,044 CNY/ton due to continued pressure from the lack of clear signs of demand.

At the end of the trading session on April 30, the price of rebar for May delivery on the Shanghai Stock Exchange decreased by 0.13% (4 yuan) to 3,044 yuan/ton. Meanwhile, the price of iron ore for May delivery on the Dalian Stock Exchange decreased by 0.33% (2.5 yuan) to 761.5 yuan/ton, while the price of ore on the Singapore Stock Exchange decreased by 1.05 USD to 97.41 USD/ton.

In Brazil, pig iron prices rose by $5/mt in April to $450/mt free on board (FOB) as of April 30, according to Kallanish. US steel mills have returned to buying the product, traders said, so prices are expected to rise further in May and June.

This insider information is confirmed by data from the Instituto Aço Brasil, according to which pig iron exports in March increased by 4.8% compared to the same period last year – reaching 350,400 tons. However, in the first quarter as a whole, exports decreased by 18.6%, to 855,000 tons. The US market is the main export destination for Brazilian pig iron.

Pig iron prices rose in April despite increased supply. Pig iron production rose 9.8% in March to 2.3 million tonnes, and 2.5% in the first quarter to 6.63 million tonnes. This additional output was absorbed by domestic steel mills. Brazil’s steel production rose 6.6% to 2.94 million tonnes in March and 2.8% to 8.48 million tonnes in the first quarter.

Italian pig iron prices fell by $35/ton from April 4 to April 25, to $355/ton FOB Marghera. This development reflects the gloomy situation of the European steel market in the period January-April 2025.

Meanwhile, Indian pig iron prices were stable at $415/mt FOB East Coast in the second half of April, after rising $48/mt in the first half. This rapid increase in prices has clearly shocked the market, which is not ready for another round of price increases despite rising steel product prices.

As reported earlier, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced plans to increase steel production capacity to 500 million tonnes per year by 2047 and export potential to 25 million tonnes. According to him, India will aim to zero steel imports and have a trade surplus in finished steel products.

Domestically, construction steel prices at some enterprises are stable. Specifically, the price of Hoa Phat 's CB240 steel is recorded at 13,550 VND/kg, CB300 steel is 13,600 VND/kg. Similarly, at Viet Sing Steel Enterprise, the price of CB240 steel is recorded at 13,450 VND/kg, D10 CB300 steel is quoted at 13,650 VND/kg. Meanwhile, Viet Duc Steel records D10 C300 at 13,740 VND/kg, and CB240 steel at 13,500 VND/kg.
