On December 17th, the domestic construction steel market continued to maintain stable prices, with no new adjustments recorded. On the international market, steel prices fluctuated in opposite directions, while iron ore prices saw a slight recovery after hitting a five-month low, mainly due to expectations of increased inventory stockpiling by Chinese mills.

Global market developments

On the Shanghai Futures Exchange (SHFE), the price of rebar futures for August 2026 delivery remained almost unchanged at 3,093 yuan/tonne, reflecting cautious investor sentiment.

Meanwhile, iron ore futures prices recovered. The most actively traded iron ore contract on the Dalian Commodity Exchange (DCE) rose 0.66% to 758 yuan/tonne (approximately $107.63/tonne). Similarly, on the Singapore exchange, the January iron ore futures contract also increased 0.41% to $101.95/tonne.

The upward momentum in iron ore prices stemmed from expectations that Chinese steel mills would increase imports in preparation for the Lunar New Year holiday. However, this upward trend was hampered by increased supply. Data from consulting firm Mysteel showed that exports from Australia and Brazil rose 11.7% year-on-week, reaching 29.67 million tonnes as of December 14th.

For other raw materials, coking coal prices fell 0.62%, while metallurgical coal prices rose 0.27%. Other steel products on the Shanghai exchange showed mixed performance: rebar rose 0.23%, hot-rolled coil increased 0.28%, while wire rod fell 0.39% and stainless steel declined 1.67%.
