Steel prices on the exchange
Rebar on the Shanghai Futures Exchange (SHFE) for February 2025 delivery fell 1 yuan to 2,979 yuan/t.
Iron ore futures fell as a prolonged crisis in China's property market continued to weigh on the demand outlook for the steelmaking material.
The most-traded September iron ore contract on China's Dalian Commodity Exchange (DCE) fell 0.36% to 692.5 yuan ($96.32) a tonne.
Benchmark iron ore for July delivery (SZZFN5) on the Singapore Exchange was trading steady at $92.35 a tonne.
Downstream demand in China has entered the low season and inventories continue to build up, brokerage Hexun Futures said in a note.
Total iron ore inventories across ports in China rose about 1.06% week on week to 133.4 million tonnes as of June 13, according to Steelhome data.
Moreover, real estate sales have weakened and market sentiment has turned cautious, Hexun added.
China's new home prices fell in May, extending a two-year slump, official data showed on Monday.
Demand for new homes in China is likely to remain significantly below the market's 2017 peak for the next few years, Goldman Sachs said, in a forecast that suggests the world's second-largest economy faces a prolonged property downturn.
Meanwhile, the dollar index, which measures the currency against six others, was at 98.957 and was set to gain 0.8% for the week, its strongest weekly gain since late February.
A stronger greenback makes dollar-denominated assets less accessible to holders of other currencies.
Other steelmaking components on the DCE also fell, with coking coal and metallurgical coal (DCJcv1) down 1.07% and 0.69%, respectively.
Steel benchmarks on the Shanghai Futures Exchange were mixed. Steel rebar and hot-rolled coil both fell about 0.2%, while stainless steel rose 0.56% and steel wire rod (SWRcv1) edged up 0.06%.
