House rent, eating out prices push up CPI in May 2025

The consumer price index (CPI) in May increased by 0.16% over the previous month, mainly due to increases in prices of house rent, home maintenance materials, electricity, and eating out.

The General Statistics Office ( Ministry of Finance ) has just released a report on the socio-economic situation in May and the first 5 months of 2025. Accordingly, the consumer price index (CPI) in May increased by 0.16% compared to the previous month, mainly due to increased prices of house rent, housing maintenance materials, electricity and eating out.

Also according to the General Statistics Office, of the 11 main groups of consumer goods and services, 10 groups increased in price, while the transportation group decreased in price.

Specifically, among the 10 groups of goods and services with increased price indexes, the housing, electricity, water, fuel and construction materials group recorded an increase of 0.73%, mainly increasing prices in the following items: Prices of housing maintenance materials increased by 1.20%; house rental prices increased by 0.64%; household electricity prices increased by 0.84%; household water prices increased by 1.0%.

The group of other goods and services increased by 0.43%, mainly concentrated in a number of items: Jewelry group increased by 10.64% according to domestic and world gold prices; body care products increased by 0.52%; handbags, suitcases, wallets increased by 0.48%...

The culture, entertainment and tourism group increased by 0.28%. Of which, package tourism increased by 1.09% (domestic tourism increased by 1.24%; international tourism increased by 0.67%) due to the strong increase in tourism demand during holidays and preparation for the peak summer season; sports venue rental tickets increased by 0.51%; sports equipment increased by 0.15%.

The post and telecommunications group increased by 0.21%, of which the price of regular mobile phones increased by 0.68%; accessories for smart mobile phones and tablets increased by 0.51%; smart mobile phones and tablets increased by 0.28%; labor costs and prices of replacement parts increased.

The group of household appliances and equipment increased by 0.19%. Of which, washing machine repair increased by 0.64%; air conditioner repair increased by 0.40%; refrigerator repair increased by 0.37% due to the beginning of the hot season, while the cost of components and maintenance services also increased.

The beverage and tobacco group increased by 0.14% due to increased production costs and consumer demand, of which carbonated soft drinks increased by 0.49%; bottled, canned, and boxed energy drinks increased by 0.17%. Prices of cigarettes and beer of all kinds increased by 0.18% and 0.10% respectively compared to the previous month.

The group of garments, hats, and footwear increased by 0.05%. Of which, the price index of footwear services increased by 0.40%; hats, caps, and raincoats increased by 0.52%; garment services increased by 0.33%; fabrics of all kinds increased by 0.12%; other garments such as gloves and socks of all kinds increased by 0.04%.

The food and catering services group increased by 0.03%, of which: Food decreased by 0.18%; foodstuff decreased by 0.04%; eating out increased by 0.28%.

The group of medicines and medical services increased by 0.02%, mainly in the group of medical equipment such as fever reducers, blood pressure monitors, cotton, medical bandages... increased by 0.25% due to increased production costs and people's health care needs.

The education group increased by 0.01%. Of which, stationery prices increased by 0.12%, specifically: Pens of all kinds increased by 0.24%; stationery and other school supplies increased by 0.17%; paper products increased by 0.11%.

The transportation group alone decreased by 0.42%, mainly due to a 2.33% decrease in the diesel price index; the gasoline price index decreased by 1.20% due to the impact of domestic gasoline price adjustments following world gasoline prices.

According to the General Statistics Office, core inflation in May 2025 increased by 0.33% compared to the previous month and increased by 3.33% compared to the same period last year. On average, in the first 5 months of 2025, core inflation increased by 3.1% compared to the same period last year, lower than the average CPI increase of 3.21%.
