In an interview with Bloomberg on April 20, an anonymous veteran who was an experienced diver for the Danish Navy gave a new assessment of the suspect in the Nord Stream pipeline sabotage in the Baltic Sea.
According to this veteran, the gas pipeline connecting Russia with Germany was most likely destroyed by an "elite naval force".
"Finding the pipelines without precise coordinates or modern tracking technology, and then transporting the explosives to the target is a huge challenge. It would take a long time for ordinary divers to do this. It is likely that the divers will be assisted by autonomous underwater vehicles, similar to those used by elite naval forces," said the former Danish Navy diver.
After the interview was published, the Danish Navy admitted that the veteran's comments were "reasonable." Meanwhile, the Danish Ministry of Defense , Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Danish Intelligence Service did not comment.
In late March 2023, Danish authorities said they had discovered a strange tube-shaped object about 10cm in diameter near the site of the explosion at the Nord Stream 2 pipeline. Copenhagen then invited Nord Stream AG2, a Russian-controlled company, to participate in the process of locating and recovering the strange object.
In mid-March, Russian President Vladimir Putin also announced that a search ship of state-owned energy giant Gazprom had discovered an object designed like an antenna about 30km from the area where the Nord Stream gas pipeline explosions occurred.
Previously, Sweden and Denmark recorded a leak on two Nord Stream gas pipelines after several large explosions equivalent to several hundred kilograms of explosives occurred on September 26, 2022.
Russian energy giant Gazprom said that both lines A and B of the Nord Stream 1 pipeline and line A of Nord Stream 2 have suffered unprecedented damage and that it is currently unable to estimate when repairs will be completed.
There were four major leaks in the pipeline running from Russia to Germany across the Baltic Sea. Many questions were raised, but both Russia and the West said it appeared to be an act of deliberate sabotage.
