In summary, the domestic pepper market did not fluctuate much last week, remaining at a high level; in the two provinces of Dak Lak and Dak Nong, it is being purchased by agents at 153,000 VND/kg, an increase of 2,000 VND/kg compared to the previous week. Gia Lai recorded an unchanged price of 151,000 VND/kg.

In the world market, last week, pepper prices in most major exporting countries generally remained stable, except for Indonesia which recorded slight fluctuations.

Experts say that although pepper prices have not fluctuated much, they remain high, reflecting the trend of scarce supply after the harvest, while demand from the Middle East and European markets is forecast to increase sharply in the second quarter. However, domestic purchasing power remains sluggish, causing the market to not have a clear price rebound.

However, competitive pressure is increasing as the US implements a new tax policy. In the second quarter, Vietnamese pepper entering this market is subject to a 10% tax, and this figure may increase to 25-30% from the third quarter, making Vietnamese pepper inferior to Brazil and Indonesia - two competitors with significantly lower tax rates.

Some forecasts suggest that pepper prices may increase slightly from mid-May to early June 2025. The main reason is that businesses are speeding up the completion of delivery contracts in the second quarter and import demand is increasing from major markets such as Europe and the Middle East.

However, according to the Vietnam Pepper and Spice Association, the domestic market has not yet shown any clear momentum for price increases. Slow consumption, combined with traders’ wait-and-see attitude, has kept prices from fluctuating much.

Experts say that after the US applied a reciprocal tax policy, Vietnamese pepper is facing great competitive pressure from Brazil and Indonesia, two countries with lower tax rates, reducing the attractiveness of Vietnamese pepper in the US market.
