Notable news about pepper prices today May 20, 2025

According to information from Thehindubusinessline, the current pepper market situation is experiencing remarkable fluctuations. The amount of black pepper imported into India has skyrocketed, leading traders to call on the government to take measures to protect domestic pepper growers. Specifically, they demand renegotiation of tariff incentives and setting of minimum import prices (MIP) for this spice.

Aswath Balaji, chief operating officer of Hectar Global, said that imports from Sri Lanka and Vietnam are increasing, putting pressure on domestic pepper prices. Currently, pepper consignments from Sri Lanka are being cleared at Indian ports at less than Rs 650 per kg and retailing at around Rs 675, while Indian pepper is still priced at around Rs 700 per kg, down 5% in the last three weeks.

The new crop from Sri Lanka, expected to be harvested in June, will continue to put downward pressure on prices, especially with the India-Sri Lanka Free Trade Agreement (FTA) allowing duty-free entry for the first 2,500 tonnes and only 8% duty on the excess volume.

On the export front, Indian pepper is currently being offered at around $8,650 per tonne, higher than pepper from Sri Lanka ($7,200), Vietnam ($7,100), Brazil ($7,000) and Indonesia ($7,500). Pepper imports from Sri Lanka in the 2024–25 crop year have reached 24,000 tonnes, up sharply from 14,000 tonnes in the previous season.

India’s pepper production in 2025–26 is forecast to be around 76,000 tonnes, down further from 126,000 tonnes last year. India’s annual consumption is estimated at around 60,000 tonnes, driven by health-conscious trends and culinary applications.

During fiscal 2024–25, India exported over 19,000 tonnes of pepper, valued at US$ 80.23 million, up 18% in volume and 40% in value over the same period last year.

The current pepper market situation is being greatly affected by the increased import volume, along with requests from traders for support policies for domestic pepper growers. Stability in prices and output will depend on policy measures in the coming time.
